Focus: Indigenous Plants, Weapons and


Lesson Date: 20/5/2014
Instruments

Learning Outcome: After completing the required activity, Grade: 3/4 Lesson
each pair of students will have a wide knowledge of either Duration: 2

Pens/pencils/connector pens
Poster paper
Coloured paper

Glue/ruler/scissors
Camera/phone (to take photos of at the site visit)

Lesson Activity/Process Before Site Visit

5 mins Students are separated into pairs and allocated a weapon, plant or instrument
to research.

45 mins Students are required to research their allocated topic with computers or iPads
that have internet connection.
Students must include the headings and provide the information under these
headings

Plant (such as Dropping She-oak, Golden Wattle, Kangaroo Grass, Clustered


Sword-sedge, Manna Gum)
- What is the plants name?
- What is the plants indigenous name?
- What was the plant used for?
- Any other interesting facts about this plant?
- Provide a photo of the plant

Weapon (such as the Nulla Nulla, Shields, Boomerang)
- What is the weapons name?
- What is the weapons indigenous name?
- What was the weapon used for?
- Any other interesting facts about this weapon?
- Provide a photo of this weapon

Instrument (such as the Didgeridoo, Clapsticks, Coolamon)


- What is the name of the instrument?
- What is the instruments indigenous name?
- What was the instrument used for?
- Any other interesting facts about this instrument?
- Provide a photo of the instrument

These questions will be displayed on the whiteboard. Students are also


required to write the websites they have used as a reference.

In this allocated time period, students are also asked to design a poster about
the research they have conducted.
5 mins
Students are told to finish up there posters and to sit on the floor in front of the
whiteboard.
30 mins
Each pair is to present their poster and inform the class of their findings and if
any students have any relevant questions to ask, then they may do so.
5 mins
To end the lesson, re-cap over plants, weapons and instruments the students
have learnt by a quiz like form such as, what was the plant that is used to
make a boomerang?

Each poster is kept for the after excursion activity

Site Visit

Students are too take photos of their site visit to Narana Creations
focusing on the plants, weapons and instruments they researched
Students are to be aware of the Site in order for further discussion after
the site visit
Students are to ask any questions about the topics they researched that
they dont understand
Students are too be respectful of the Site Visit and not cause any major
disruptions
Lesson Activity/Process After Site Visit

15 mins Students gather on the floor and discuss their findings after visiting Narana
Creations. Attempt to focus mostly on the Curragundi Garden Trial and the

seminar on weapons and instruments.

10 mins Students are too write down any extra information on the poster they created
before the excursion, that they learnt at the site that is relevant to a specific
weapon, instrument or plant.
Note: They can write on any poster, it doesnt have to be the one they created
in prior lesson.

After completed, the students posters are copied into an information booklet
and given to each student to take home. The original copy is kept in the
classroom as a resource if children need/want to find out information about
these topics or further work in class.
