5.0 MARS ROVER CONSTRUCTION SEQUENCE
5.1: Step 1
Tools and materials check
Please insure that all the materials and tools listed to construct the rover have been
acquired. For every detail of material used, please refer to section 2.0 to check. In
addition, check the table in section 4.0 for every tool needed.
5.2: Step 2
Preparation of base/chassis
The base will have to constructed from the modular basket (refer to table).
next using a hacksaw cut out the section above the 60mm mark
and discard the top part that has been sawed off.
4
5.3 Step 3
Wheels
First, obtain Black rubber tyre and visually scrutinize it for any
obvious noticeable faults
To get the exact wheel with right dimensions use the barcode
provided below at stores such as Bunnings (09315570152129)
Then place the rod (refer to mars lander drawing number 2 for rod
dimensions) in to first whole from front and fourth whole from the
back.
Then after place four wheels( refer to mars lander drawing number
3 for wheel dimensions) by leaving 10mm of the rod left over in
each end which allows the rod to be bent so wheels stay in place.
As shown in car drawing in the drawing package.
5.4 Step 4
Lunch box
First, obtain lunch box and visually scrutinize it for any obvious
noticeable faults.
Cut a 30x30 square piece from 50mm from the back of the base of
the lunch box.
Place the lunch box on chassis, both lunch box and chassis
upright
Glue the lunch box to the chassis so that the back wheel axle fits
into the 30x30 square hole.
Place the water bottle into the lunch box and close the lid.
5
Final assembly of chassis frame, axles and wheels
Lastly this is a summary of how to properly assemble the parts after they have been
prepared in the previous stage.
Place two of the 230mm axial rods through the chassis (which has a pre-
perforated base), one on the fourth hole from the back and another at the first
hole at the front from the front. The axial rod at the back should also pass
through the hole that has been cut on the lunch box
Next put the wheels through the axle leaving 10mm of the rod left over on
each side.
Then bend the left over rod for better wheel stability
Place water bottle into the lunch box and close it with lid.
Then glue the lunch box to the bottom of the chassis at the back of the lander
(lunch box must be fitted in a way that the square hole that has been cut fits
through the axle rod)
The completed model must bear a resemblance to the final product 3D drawing that
has been provided in the drawing package on the page titled car assembly.
