Chemical sciences: Mixtures Term 2 Weeks 2 and 3

We are learning that mixtures including solutions contain number of pure substances that can be separated
using a range of techniques.
We will identify questions that can be investigated, plan investigations using fair experimental methods,
summarise data and use scientific language.

What do you already know about mixtures including some of the mixtures we make and use
everyday? Consider gasses, liquids and solids.
How can different substances in mixtures be separated from each other?

Engage: Can you identify these substances through their smell?

A: B: C:

D: E: F:

Two of these have been mixed together. Can you identify what is in this mixture?

Z:

Explore 1: Making mixtures bubble mixture

Use the recipe to make bubble mix and practice using the straws to make bubbles.

Investigation 1.
Use the recipe for bubble mixture and the outline for science investigations to investigate the first
question.

What happens to bubbles when we change the type of detergent?

Can you think of two other questions that could be investigated through a fair test?

2..

Investigation 2.
As a group select a question and investigate.
