1.0 INTRODUCTION

1.1 Current Scenario

Go Kart is a simple four wheeled, small engine and single seated racing car used
mainly in United States in 1950s, where the engine mainly from discarded lawn engine. Go-
kart is a driving and racing miniature, skeleton frame, and rear engine automobiles called
karts (DiNozzi. B, 1999). It also can be driven by 2 stroke-engine, 4 stroke-engine or electric
motor. Go kart is a non-popular sport previously, but today it has become one of the most
popular sports by multiple group of age. Now days, racing go karts are considered as one of
the most economic activity where a large number of people can participate. We regularly hear
about motorsport racing such as formula one, NASCAR, rally art and many more. Those
motorsports activity is out of reach of the average people because of strict regulations and
high cost. But apparently, go kart motorsport gives chances to public to get involved in legal
racing with no restricted age and low budget needed. Seven times formula one World
champion, Michael Schumacher started his involvement in motorsports with karting. He
joined go kart motor sports at his hometown, Germany and won his first go kart
championship when he was 19 years old (McAuley. J, 2008). All go-karts look alike, but the
fact is go karts have its own classes such as sprint kart, road racing kart, indoor karting and
speedway karting. In addition, with small engine and skeleton frame go karts speed can reach
up to 100 miles per hours and stand a weight up to 210 pounds. Thus, from this scenario it is
a good opportunity to do an innovation in this activity by applying the engineering and
business knowledge being learnt. Therefore, Go Tech Go Kart would like to introduce a go
kart that able to compete in this market now days.

1
1.2 Problem Statements

i. Nowadays, manufactured go kart in Malaysia is very expensive which is around RM

6000 to RM10000 per unit that would be difficult to majority of people to afford a
good go kart.

ii. Meanwhile, self-made or Do It Yourself go kart (DIY) is cheap but commonly

neglecting the feature of easy and cheap maintenance as not all of its components are
replaceable.
iii. The go kart should be fulfilling the specifications which are ensures the effectiveness,
safety and particularly environmental friendly. This days, many go kart was built
without consider the environment factor.

1.3 Objectives
The objectives of the project are as follow:

i. To create a go kart that is affordable to most people.

ii. To make a go kart that is environmental-friendly, safe and robust.

iii. To create a go kart that is has the feature of easy and cheap for maintenance for all of
its components.

2
2.0 Project description

This go-kart go tech made because of the development in karting together with the
advance technology. This go-kart specialized in fabrication series which is adopted advance
technique and design for new prototype. This go-kart were designed and fabricated for
participation in Car Endurance Challenge. Most go-kart used non-environmentally engine,
several problems has arisen during the activity. For the solution, innovates existing go-kart
which is in current market, but the concept design should give more flexible and quality
including profitability and service levels. With the competition demands and industry
volatility, the go-kart was developed which meets the standards in the competition. A proof of
concept simulation solution was created with which the introduction of new go-kart could be
evaluated in a risk-free environment.

This go-kart was designed with 2000W electric motor engine. It is environmental
friendly and easy to handle for Car Endurance Challenge at campus area. Other than that, it is
important to make sure the total cost of this go-kart is not exceed than RM3000 for the
affordable feature. This go-kart is expected to be able to run at least for 1km and the
operating duration is 45 minutes. The maximum speed of this go-kart would reach at least
60km/h. Furthermore, this go-kart made because of its advantages, such as provide comfort
and safety to the driver, low cost and natural energy saving simultaneously in the same time

3
and also simple design which is due to low cost in maintenance. For the construction of the
frame, the mild steel was used due to durability and light in weight. Social aspect also needs
to be emphasized by human. While safety aspect and emotional factor should also be taken
into consideration in order to make sure diurnal life process goes well.

In the go-kart design which operates with electric motor engine can help to overcome
problems that faced. In an effort to overwhelm user and environmental friendly in a
relationship between indigenous people and environment development would be worthy of
the world. As a reference from the book this way we can contribute to the achievement of the
Millennium Development Goals and respond affirmatively to the call in Our Common Future
for a new development path for sustained human progress not just in a few places for a few
years, but for the entire planet into the distant future.

2.5 Major Component and Description of Go Tech Go Kart

The Go Tech Go Kart primarily consists of 10 main parts as depicted in Table 1.1 and
described in below section.

Table 1.1: Major components and descriptions of Go Tech Go Kart.

Name of the Component Function

Tyre - To hold the weight of go-kart.

Steering - To control the go-kart.

- Keep both rear and front wheels aligned.

Battery - To provide power supply to electric motor.

Seat - To provide seat for the driver.

Chassis - Works as body in the go-kart on which all other

components are mounted or attached.

Steering shaft - It connects the steering wheel to the tie rods, so the front
wheels direction being controlled.

Electric Motor - Convert the electrical energy into mechanical energy in

order to move the go-kart.

4
Electronic Controller - Control the input of current flow through the electric
motor by using the accelerator pedal.

Axle shaft - To connect the motor to the rear tires.

Sprocket - Transmits the power from motor to the wheels.

3.0 PROJECT DESIGN

Revolution karting (2016) opines that electric karts are greener. Given that no fuel is
burning in the engine an electric karts produces no fumes. However, we accept this opinion
but in the same time we believe that the 4 stroke engine is also in the green category.
Although, the price of high power of direct current (DC) electric motor is expensive and
scarce in Malaysia, the objective of environmental friendly is still the priority. Below is the
gantt chart for the progress of this go kart project.

3.4.2 Safety Precaution

The go kart is expected to be operated not more than an hour contiuosly as the heat
can build up at electric motor. Therefore, this go kart should be limited its period of usage.
This is because the batteries being used also can has heat build up due to long operating
hours.

3.4.3 Preparation Before Start-up Go Kart

1. Fuel System

Check for any signs of fuel leaks from the tank, cap, fuel filter, vents, fittings

20
2. Cover and Guard

Check for proper installation of the steering cover, axle cover, pulley guard,
fenders and body.

3. Pads

Check seat, seat back, seat belt, roll bar, steering wheel and steering post pads
for damage; replace as needed.

4. Brakes

Check pedal travel; check for proper action during a test drive.

5. Steering

Check for smooth motion; visually check front wheel alignment.

6. Remote Shut Off System (if equipped)

Verify proper operation, per manufacturers recommendations.

7. Roll Bar

Check for any looseness in the roll bar system.

8. D Rubbers and Bumper System

Check for any signs of damage; replace when necessary.

9. Body mounts

21
Check for looseness or improper fastening.

10. Tires

Verify tires PSI is to specification; check wheels for loose or missing lug nuts.

3.4.4 Service Maintenance Manual

1. Change the Oil

Generally speaking, the go karts car oil should be changed every 25 hours.
However, it should check if go kart's oil level prior to taking it out to race.
The oil level should be visible at the bottom of the go karts filter cap threads.

2. Inspect the Spark Plug

Whenever need to change the oil, should remove and inspect the spark plug.
Check the electrodes for excess oil or carbon, and make sure to clean them
off. Use a bit of graphite grease when putting the spark plug back on so that
its easier to remove the next time the go kart need to inspect it.

3. Chain Maintenance

Apply chain lube to the chain and allow it to sit for 10 minutes so that it can
penetrate the chain. This is also a good time to check the chain for slack. The
chain will stretch over time, and if theres too much slack, youll need to

22
tighten it up. Just dont make the chain too tight, as this will cause the kart to
move even if theres no driver behind the wheel.

4.0 BUSINESS AND MARKETING PERSPECTIVES

4.1 Initial Business perspective

We live in a society that revolves around entertainment. People are looking for new things to
do and new experience. Entertainment industry thrives on the disposable personal income of
consumers for the success of their come place of many big events. We see the potential
customer engagement to the RnD department of Automotive Universities and Go Kart club
around Malaysia in addition to have potential of being the provider of many events and
entertainment shows.

It is important to plan and produce a low cost Go-Kart and suitable for entertainment

23
use. With that, our team applied the marketing mix developed by Edmund Jerome McCarthy
which are known as 4Ps: price, product, promotion, and place. Each of the components is
discussed as below:-

Price: Our group provides a good-quality product with low cost that is
customized to the clients needs. The price of Go-Kart has been finalized based
on two pricing strategy:-

a. Cost based pricing

It is decided that the price per unit of Go Kart is RM3, 200. The price is set
after listing all the related cost shown in appendix.

b. Value based pricing

The price our group offered is relevant to the products designation and the
operation system used. The product is considered as a custom made product
as it is designed according to the customers needs. In addition, the Go Kart
is a product which will be produced when there is a demand from the
customers. Thus the cost per unit calculated is enough for us to get profit
and do money rolling in order to get back the revenue that we invested in
this project.

Products: The Go Kart main objective is to understand the finer aspects of

vehicle design with the ulterior motive of fabricating prototype vehicle that could
be manufactured for consumer sale, while strictly adhering to the competition
rule. The secondary objective is to enhance drivers comfort and safety, and to

24
increase the performance and manoeuvrability of the vehicle. Besides, we try to
optimize the design by avoiding over designing, which would also help in
reducing the cost.

Promotion: In order to promote the Go Kart, we will use a variety of

promotional avenues to gain more interest from the community and ensure that
they will continue to use the Go Kart and the karting experience for their racing
apparel needs. Promotions to be used are as follows:-

Free tee Shirts

Newsletter

We will have to carefully develop an advertising campaign to promote the Go

Kart experience, as a majority of the customers are obtained through the word-of-
mouth. The following advertisement methods will be used to spread the word of
the new Go Kart experience and increase the public knowledge of this form of
entertainment:

Radio

Website

Magazines

25
Place (Distribution): Malaysia hosts hundreds of sporting events and
conventions which generates over a billion ringgit for the country on annual
basis. Each year, an estimated 5 million visitors visit Malaysia bringing about 5
billion ringgit in revenue. Malaysia chose to use sports as an economic and
community tool, and backed the construction of sports facilities and marketing
strategies to attract top sporting events. We use direct channel marketing as we
will go directly to the any companies that provide entertainment or event services
in Malaysia in order to widen the Go Kart market. The products will be
distributed by our agents and salesmen that will approach the customers in the
sports and event companies. Besides, the customers can directly come to the
company to discuss about Go Kart and buy it.

4.2 Strength, Weakness, Opportunities & Threat (SWOT) Analysis

SWOT Analysis is a useful technique for understanding our Strengths and Weaknesses, and
for identifying both the Opportunities open to us and the Threats we face. The degree to
which the internal environment of the firm matches with the external environment is
expressed by the concept of strategic fit.

Strengths: characteristics of the business or project that give it an advantage over

others.

Weaknesses: characteristics that place the business or project at a disadvantage

relative to others.

Opportunities: elements in the environment that the business or project could

exploit to its advantage.

Threats: elements in the environment that could cause trouble for the business or
project.

4.3 Inital Market Study / Survey

The survey approach refers to a group of methods which emphasize quantitative analysis,
where data for a large number of organizations are collected through methods such as mail
questionnaires, telephone interviews, or from published statistics, and these data are analyzed
using statistical techniques. By studying a representative sample of organizations, the survey
approach seeks to discover relationships that are common across organizations and hence to
provide generalizable statements about the object of study. (Gable, 1994)

Thus, a study of marketing have been done by distributing 30 online survey forms to
all walks of life in all over Kuala Lumpur and Selangor. The objective of the survey is to
evaluate the potential users interest towards our new products concept on Go Kart. The
results of the survey are shown in the Figure 5.1 and Figure 5.2. A majority of the walk in
markets for karting consists of people between the ages of 18 to 25 at a total of 66.7

27
percentages. However, a good percentage of customers aged 26 and older also participate in
this activity. The results also show a majority of 56.7 percentage of male respondent more
than female respondent.

Figure 5. 1 Percentage of gender respondents

Figure 5. 2 Age of Go Kart Racing Respondents

Figure below shows that all 30 respondents are interested in joining a Go Kart event. This
shows that our company should focus on providing consumers with an exhilarating rush of
adrenaline and excitement. People are willing to spend more money to experience Go Kart

4.4 End-user Expectations

The end-user expectations are recorded in Figure 5.4. Majority of the respondents are
expecting low cost Go Kart which is by 86.7 percentage followed by 10 percentage of safety
features. By this, our company will utilize pricing that will consistent with the other facilities
in the market.

5.0 PROJECT BUDGET

5.1 Prototype budget

The targeted budget for this prototype is about RM3000.00. Meanwhile, the allowable
amount of claim by UniKl Malaysia France Institute (MFI) is RM3600. This is because in
order to make sure this go kart is affordable to most people, RM3000.00 is going to be the
maximum amount of cost for this go kart. This can be done by combining the both the new
and used components into this go kart. Thus, the business and marketing approach is used to
gather all the avaiable new parts and used parts in market. In order to reduce the risk of
shipping, all the components would purchased locally. Through this teams market survey, a
few of suppliersdetails for the desired parts obtained. They are listed as below:-

i. Autozone Autopart Enterprise (2nd hand parts)

6.0 CONCLUSION
From what can we conclude for this project is our go kart is a type of open wheel car and
provide a fun driving to its driver while keeping safe, comfort and sustainability. The main
focus of this go kart is not about the speed but it is about being an environment friendly,
robust and comfort. Normally the go kart price from the big company price is in range of
around RM 4000-RM6000 but for our go kart, we managed to settled it down with lower than
RM3000 so this is an advantage for us. The most important factor for vehicle is about the
safety factor that it has. We will make sure that our go kart is below the market price and still
has the most safety precautions factor. Our product will focus more to safety by providing a
lot of protection steel frame mounted on the car. We used the brake pad system for the
braking system which has the ability to stop the car safely and soundly. For the control
system, we use the simplest as easy to modify in case if there if any additional control system

needed. Last but not least, for the target market, we are targeting more too human friendly
ecosystem for example kids, youth and teenager. Of course our go kart also available to the
elders but more prefer to the youth. Big companies will design one go kart at minimum of 2
years but we made our go kart only for 2 months. We did not recommended driving this go
kart at high speed but it is best suited in 30-40 km/hour speed. The project report is prepared
in such a manner that every student can understand the detail pertaining to the project. The
report is prepared in simple language and described well. The report will adequate idea and
design guide line for making suitable report is expected to prove the valuable to the successor
students of mechanical engineering to know the essentials of a project and project report. The
matters discussed in early pages just give a broad outline of small-scale industries. We have
tried to cover all the aspect concerned with our project.
