Lesson Plan Guide

Teacher Candidate: Sandy Ahmedy Date: April, 2017

Grade and Topic: 3rd Grade Science Length of Lesson: 1 hr 30 min

Mentor Teacher: Marla Philips School: U of M

UNIT/CHAPTER OBJECTIVE/GENERALIZATION/BIG IDEA:

This lesson will be about comparing and contrasting the major solar system components by creating a table.
LESSON OBJECTIVE:
After using the internet to research facts about the major components of the solar system, TSW create a table to
compare and contrast the major components of the solar system with 90% accuracy.

STANDARDS ADDRESSED:
90307.6.2 Use a table to compare and contrast the major solar system components.
ISTE standard: Research and Information Fluency

MATERIALS:
Fill in the blank handouts
Pencils
Overhead projector
Computers
Flash drive
Microsoft Word
Internet access to:
a. https://solarsystem.nasa.gov/planets/compare
b. https://solarsystem.nasa.gov/planets/sun/facts

Technology Integration
Students will use the websites stated above as resources for the table they will create. Word processing software will be used to
type and create a table. Student will save their work on a flash drive for their class. A sample of the product is available below in
the student sample section.
BACKGROUND and RATIONALE:
What are the key concepts for the lesson? Students will demonstrate a clear understanding of information about each
major component of the solar system by creating tables.
What is the critical academic language (general and technical) that must be addressed in this lesson? Planets,
sun, Earths moon, volume, mass, density
How does this lesson connect with and build on the previous lesson(s)? This lesson is a continuation of the
Grade 2: Standard 6 - The Universe.
How do you expect to build on this lesson in subsequent lessons? Students will go on to learn more facts about
the solar system and the Earth. They will also understand how the Earths atmosphere works.
Why will you need to plan differentiated activities or assessments? Students may have disabilities in reading or
other areas. They also may be ESL or ELL students. Therefore, it is important that the lessons and assessments
are differentiated so that every student can learn the content and be successful.

PROCEDURES AND TIMELINE:

Introduction (8 min): TTW start out by saying, Have you ever wondered how big the earth is compared to the
sun? Have you ever wondered how big the universe is that we live in? Suppose you are working for NASA and
you are looking over data that you have collected for each planet, the sun and the moon. You must somehow
organize this information in a way that is easy for the public to understand. Today we will make tables using
Microsoft Word to put all this information together. First, we will research each planet, the moon, and the sun
on the internet. Then, we will put the information into tables with a partner. Then, TTW go on to say, I will
pair each one of you up with a partner. Then, everyone will get a worksheet to fill out to collect all the
information you need. After that, I will show you how to access the websites you will need for your research
and show you how to create a table in word. Then, you will begin. TTW ask if any student has questions and
answer them.

NASA websites to compare and
contrast each planet.

8. Demonstrate how to create a table.
9. Demonstrate how to label parts of
the table and how to type
information into them.
10. Model how to save the document

1. Direct students back to desks. 2. Go back to seat.
2. Ensure all tables are saved.

Closure (6 min): TTW ask students to share some answers on their worksheets. TTW have a discussion with
the class and answer remaining questions. TTW pick up the worksheets.
