Compressors
I. Positive Displacement machines
i. Reciprocating compressor
ii. Rotary compressor
II. Centrifugal compressor
III. Axial-flow compressor (?)

Both reciprocating and rotary positive displacement machines are used for a variety of
purposes

Similarly, for low pressure ratios (no greater than about 4/1) the centrifugal compressor is
lighter and is able to operate effectively over a wider range of mass flow at any one speed,
than its axial flow counterpart.

For higher pressure ratios, the axial flow compressor is more efficient and is usually
preferred. Although two or more centrifugal compressors with intercooling between
stages may be used in industrial and marine gas turbine plants.
