ABSTRACT

pH stands for potential of Hydrogen. It measures the acidity and alkalinity of

water soluble substances and ranges from 1-14. 7 indicates neutrality, below 7
means the substance is acidic while above 7 implies a basic substance. In this
experiment, two methods were used to determine the pH of a phosphate buffer. First
method used is the Electrometric Method which is done by using a pH meter
containing an electrode while Colorimetric Method works with the use of acid-base
indicators. The objective of this experiment is to compare and contrast the two
methods and identify which one is best to use. The pH of the mixture of 0.50M buffer
and sample H2O2 was determined using the electrometric method and the goal was
to make it pH 3.00 by adding HCl since the buffer is already basic. Other buffer
solutions with different pH were then determined by observing the color change after
adding acid-base indicators. At the end of the experiment, it was confirmed that
Electrometric method works more efficiently than Colorimetric Method because it is
more sensitive, not tedious, and easier to use.

INTRODUCTION METHODOLOGY

Based on the colorimetric

hydrogen peroxide sample is 3.00 which

from the electrometric method which
was 5.54 and 3.25, respectively.

CONCLUSION

In conclusion, the electrometric method in determining the pH of our sample,

hydrogen peroxide, was more efficient and accurate than the colorimetric
method in determining the pH of a substance. In using the colorimetric method,
the pH of the sample was still identified but it took more time and it was less
accurate. The colors observed from the buffer solution at pH 3.0 were very close
to the colors observed when the indicators were added to the hydrogen peroxide
sample. Therefore, the pH of the prepared buffer solution is pH 3.0.
