Book: Whos In My Family? All About Our Families, Robie H. Harris, 2012

Grade Level: Elementary grades K-2

Multicultural theme:

Diverse Families, Recognizing similarities and accepting differences, Understanding unique

family demographics

Materials:

The book Whos In My Family? All About Our Families by Robie H. Harris, whiteboard, dry

erase markers, Venn diagram worksheets, sheets of white paper, strips of construction paper to

make picture frames, glue sticks, pencils, crayons, colored markers, Venn diagram worksheets

Standard(s):

RL.1.3 - Describe characters, settings, and major events in a story, using key details.

RL.1.7 - Use illustrations and details in a story to describe its characters, setting, or events.

RL.1.9 - Compare and contrast the adventures and experiences of characters

in stories.

Objective(s):

The student will be able to describe characters and settings in a story through group discussion

with 95% accuracy.

The student will be able to compare and contrast characters in the story in a group discussion

with 90% accuracy.

The student will be able to identify characteristics of their family and relate ideas to a peers

family with 90% accuracy.

Procedure:

1) Introduce:

Show the book Whos In My Family? All About Our Families by Robie H. Harris and say, Today

we are going to talk about families. Who here has a family? Thats good! We all have families,

but are all of our families the same? Briefly discuss the topic of family. Ask students to look at

the book cover and describe the family. Write students observations on board.

2) Read:

Read the book aloud.

3) Discuss:

Discuss different families found in book, settings that the characters were found in, and key

family events in book.

Question 1: Who is in your family?

Question 2: What are some of the different animal families found in the book?
Question 3: What are some things that your family likes to do?
Question 4: Why is your family unique or special?
Question 5: Why do you think that this family is eating rice and soup for breakfast or

why this one is eating hummus?

4) Activities:

1) Working in small groups, students will create a family portrait, using crayons, markers, or

colored pencils to add details that make their family special. Adding strips of construction paper

around the edges to make a frame. (Hands On) When the assignment is complete, the teacher

will display portraits in the classroom.

2) Students will pair with one classmate and they will share their portraits and describe their

families to each other. Students will each fill in a Venn diagram worksheet comparing and

contrasting their families to that of their peer.

Evaluation:

Teacher will observe the portrait activity, discussing details with students. Teacher will check

Venn diagrams for accuracy of individual similarities and differences.
