Annotated Bibliography on How Bilingualism Affects Job Preparation

Bennett, C. I. "Preparing Teachers for Cultural Diversity and National Standards of Academic

Excellence." Journal of Teacher Education 46.4 (1995): 259-65. Web.

This article explains how a movement/challenge was created to push American educators to

incorporate additional efforts in maintaining excellence amongst culturally diverse classroom

settings. The challenge was specifically targeted towards teachers working with racial and

language minorities, in attempt to achieve high levels of academic excellence in this sector of

students. I think this journal is very powerful because it really advocates for cultural

consciousness and demonstrates how language can become a barrier in efficient societal

engagement/development. I like how the author proposed a solution to an evident problem and

had research/facts to support her position. This caused the position to be less bias This article is

useful to my overall theme because it shows a way that bilingualism affects the competence of

appealing to diversity. This could affect employment because overtime if teachers arent able to

effectively inform those with particular needs, there could be a need for individuals who can

replace those who cant speak a particular language or relate with this group of people. It also

gives insight on how cultural diversity, language specifically, calls for certain aspects to be

necessary for harmonious social interactions.

Chau, Lisa. "Why You Should Learn Another Language." U.S. News & World Report. U.S.

News & World Report, 29 Feb. 2014. Web. 10 Feb. 2017.

This news article explains how learning another language creates an advantage for success in the

corporate field. The writer of the article illustrates a first-hand example of the interviewees

success abroad through his second language. There have been many scenarios of how being

bilingual has created job security and allowed for extra opportunities outside and within

companies. I think this article did a decent job relating to previous speculations. For example,

McMunn stated how in most scenarios, individuals who speak a second language earn an

additional pay increase. I really like how Ryan McMunn, the interviewee, provided insight by

explaining how learning Mandarin opened opportunities in China which in turn expanded his

business internationally. This portrays how being able to make connections with individuals

outside your first language not only helps someone do their job well but bring in revenue and

expand a companys relations. This text is an excellent source that provides a personal situation

portraying the benefit of using a second language as a tool for effective communication amongst

multilingual business communities.

Krashen, Stephen. "Why Bilingual Education? ERIC Digest." Bilingual (January 1997): ERIC.

Web. 11 Feb. 2017.

In a particular section of this journal, the text analyzes the criticism of bilingual education and its

affect from the public opinion. It also discusses the differences of knowledge and literacy

developed when children learn in their primary language versus from a secondary language. I

like the approach that this article took as it focused on the misconceptions, trying to prove why

they are false, while advocating for increased bilingualism. On the other hand, I feel they

couldve provided a little more information/research. The sections were vague and focused on

statistics that could be classified outdated. This article was useful to my theme to show that
although a common argument is that bilingual education is ineffective, evidence shows

otherwise.

Bhattacharjee, Yudhijit. "Why Bilinguals Are Smarter." The New York Times. The New York

Times, 17 Mar. 2012. Web. 12 Feb. 2017.

This article discusses how scientist have discovered that being bilingual has extreme effects on

the brain and improves cognitive skills unrelated to language. This article did well in explanation

of the specific affects bilingualism has on the brain. Although it only explains the key differences

in those who speak two languages to those who dont, it shows factors that could be beneficial in

the workplace. This article is useful to my theme because it describes the advantages of being

bilingual. It states that those who speak another language are quicker and more efficient at

performing task which could be very beneficial in the workplace.

Andruss, Paula. "How Being Bilingual Can Boost Your Career." How Being Bilingual Can Boost

Your Career. Minnesota State CAREERwise Education, Mar. 2008. Web. 12 Feb. 2017.

This article explains the advantages of fluency in a second language. It focuses on aspects that

can boost an individuals career and help them become more valuable to an employer. I really

appreciate how the article focuses on the positive characteristics of bilingualism used in

professions. The writer uses statistics to support the statements that compose the article. The

article also doesnt limit the information to one section of the workforce as other articles have

done. I also feel this article pinpointed key aspects of the benefits that could allow someone to

easily be persuaded to look into learning an additional language. This article compliments my

theme as it thoroughly explained how being bilingual can help individuals stand out among

prospective employers. It specifically speaks on the opportunities bilingualism opens up that

those who dont speak a foreign language miss out on. This essentially discusses how

bilingualism affects job preparation, which hits my theme head on.
