Intro to charge and coulombs law (electrostatics)

Lesson Topic
45 minute class.
Dates/
Timeline:
(Planned start
and end)

Essential -What is the phenomena of electric charge?

Questions: -What causes something to become charged?
-How do charged particles interact with eachother?
-How can we model charge interaction using
Coulombs law

What came before this?
What lessons can easily be related to things before, how can students
make connections? Overarching themes? How will it be student
centered?
Waves- sound and light (a little)
Oscillations
Gravity and force diagrams! Forces attracting things

What can this lead to?

What questions might this lead to? What topics can you easily
transition to?

Leads well into DC circuits and magnetism. (DC circuits is the last unit)
Engage
How will students be engaged? (possible lessons, videos, etc.) with
duration. What are students and teacher doing during?

Show earth and what its gravitational field lines look like, compare to a
charge, which looks exactly the same, this will just show the
relationship between the two, being forces exerted without contact of
the two figures.

After this, a short intro into how things are charged will happen,
showing what makes something positive or negative, and how these
features can be changed. This will be done using normal scotch tape,
or possibly some wool and rods.

Then, there will be a short section showing students where we see

these charges around their everyday life (DNA, Bees, hummingbirds,
my car)

Formatives
-General feedback from students- engagement as a whole
Explore
(possible lessons, videos, etc.) with duration. What are students and
teacher doing during?

Next will introduce Coulombs law, and show the comparison to the
gravitational force that looks identical, with a different constant. After
analyzing this, we will calculate the force between two charges really
quick to get a feel for it. Before that, show some force diagrams
between different scenarios with charges in a space. This will be the
meat of the day, where the content is really starting to be introduced. I
want to make sure everyone gets things here, so I will try and walk
around while they are calculating and clear anything up. We cannot
move on until I am clear that everyone is at least grasping something.

Formatives
Quickness of calculations,
Going around and seeing how each group is feeling about it.
Explain
What are the key concepts you want students to be able to explain?
How will they accomplish this? How long will it take?

Then we will calculate the force between two people from gravitation
and from charges, to show how strong the electrostatic force is
comparatively. Hopefully this will be a pretty fun and interactive point
where we can slow down and have fun with it. There will be a few more
examples to make sure they are getting it before we move on.This is
where I can analyze the class and see how quickly they are getting it.

Then we will play with physics toys, discovering charge and seeing the
effects in real life.

Formatives
This will be (hopefully) the end of the hour, The formative here
will be if they have a lot of questions or not, and how engaged
they are. I will also have a group explanation of something
they found with the physics toys and their explanation of what
is happening.
Elaborate
How will you extend learning? Relate to other topics? Activities for
further in-depth learning? Debates?

Evaluate
How will students assess progress? How will teacher assess? Possible
summative evaluation if necessary. What are the key findings you want
students to discover?
