Grade and Topic: Grade 6, Science Length of Lesson: 45 minutes for 2 days

Mentor Teacher: Marla Phillips and Peggy Murdock School: University of Memphis

UNIT/CHAPTER OBJECTIVE/GENERALIZATION/BIG IDEA:

The Major Components of the Solar System Lesson is a part of a unit covering the basic structure and
operational principles of the universe.

LESSON OBJECTIVE:
Given a computer and a website, the student will build a solar system that identifies the major components, with
a score of three out of four on the rubric.
Given a computer and website, the student will create a comic strip that demonstrates a concept about the solar
system, with a score of three out of four on the rubric.
Given the Components of the Solar System Quiz, the student will choose the best answer to demonstrate their
knowledge of the solar system, with a score of 3 out of 4 points
STANDARDS ADDRESSED:
TN Science-0607.61 Analyze information about the major components of the universe

MATERIALS:
The Major Components of the Universe Quiz
Pencil
Computer
Internet Access to
1. Comic Strip Generator http://toondoo.com/
2. Solar System Builder http://www.kidsastronomy.com/fun/make-a-solar-system.htm

BACKGROUND and RATIONALE:

Students will demonstrate a clear understanding of the components of the solar system by providing a comic
strip, building their own solar system, and completing the quiz.
Academic Language is not addressed in IDT 3600.
This lesson is a continuation of the TN science standard 6.0
We will refer back to these assignments here as we continue to explore the solar system

PROCEDURES AND TIMELINE:

Introduction:
Hello students! You will be training with NASA to become astronauts. NASA needs young astronauts
immediately, some of their astronauts are stuck in space and need your help to get them back! For your
first task, you will build your own solar system so you can learn the major components. Once you are
done with that, you will use a comic strip generator to design a comic, your comic will demonstrate a
concept of the solar system. For your final task, you will take a quiz in order to become an astronaut.
Alright ladies and gentleman, work hard in finishing you tasks!
Procedures:
At the Computer: (45 Minutes)
Teacher Procedures:
1. After the Introduction, have students open up an Internet browser
2. Direct students to the Make a Solar System website
3. Go over the assignment
4. Monitor and assist as needed
Student Procedures:
1. Open up an Internet Browser
2. Go to the make a Solar System Website
3. Look for the Menu tab. The menu tab will list the planets, asteroids, and comets
4. Go to Menu
5. Under Menu, go to the Planets
6. Add each planet, by clicking add
7. Go to the Asteroids tab
8. Click Create Asteroid Belt
9. Go to the Comet tab

After the Computer (45 minutes)
Teacher Procedures:
1. Place students in groups of 5 students
2. Have students pass around their comic strip
3. Once they have finished reviewing each others comic strips, they will pass it to the next group, until
all papers have been reviewed
4. Give students 5-10 minutes to discuss their comics
5. Collect comics
6. Go over the instructions for the quiz
7. Hand out the quiz
8. Monitor
9. Collect quizzes
Student Procedures
1. While in groups, students will have a discussion on each others comic strips
2. Students will turn in their comic strips, when done with discussion

MODIFICATIONS:
Modifications for the comic strip assignment will include: instead of using the Toondoo, the student will be
given a sheet of paper to hand draw the comic.
Modifications for the Making the Solar System assignment will include: The student will be given pictures of the different
components of the solar system, and they will arrange it in the correct order.
For students who are ready for more activities, will learn more about the solar system using
http://www.sciencekids.co.nz/gamesactivities/earthsunmoon.html. This website will go into more detail
about the orbits of the Earth, moon, and sun. They will play a game for a better understanding.
