It insists upon logic in formal classes and in the writing Center for Experiential Learning Roundtable Discussions 11

CALL TO COMMUNITY of truth. Life there is the Wisdom through whom all these things were made, and all others that have been or ever will be; but Wisdom
herself is not made: she is as she always has been and will be forever (St. Augustine, Confessions, Bk. IX.24).
I n the recessive backcross, Mendel reasoned, each of the four types of hybrid gametes should produce a pea that looks different
from any of the other types. And each of the types should have an equal chance of occurring. . . . That is exactly what happened.
Of the 203 peas produced by the double-recessive backcross, Mendel counted 55 that were yellow and round, 44 yellow and angular,
51 green and round, and 53 green and angular. That ratio among the four types was nearly 1:1:1:1. This was what Mendel had
been looking for. The crop fulfilled these expectations perfectly. . . . There could scarcely be now any doubt of the success of the
experiment (Robin Marantz Henig, The Monk in the Garden, pp. 128-29).
A s regards mathematics, chemistry, astronomy, and similar subjects, one man will not, on the score of his religion, treat of them
better than another, and because the works of even an unbeliever or idolator, while he kept within the strict range of such
studies, might be safely admitted into Catholic lecture-rooms, and put without scruple into the hands of Catholic youths. There is no
crying demand, no imperative necessity, for our acquisition of a Catholic Euclid, or a Catholic Newton. The object of all science is
truth (John Henry Cardinal Newman, The Idea of a University, 3.2.1).
T he unbeliever has no objective reason to mistrust the results acquired by natural procedures, under the pretext that they were
judged not only according to the principles of reason, but also the truths of faith. He is free to have recourse to the measure of
reason in all its rigor and to refuse to what appears to him insufficient. Moreover, it depends on him to pursue the road and to take
knowledge of the results acquired thanks to revelation (Edith Stein, Christian Philosophy).
Two parents, tall as pines,
Two teenage children, small as sprouts.
Four ugly Christmas sweaters,
Knit wool, warm as blankets.
Four crimson hats
On ruffled caramel hair.
My mom yanks my brother close,
Her ruby nails grip his arm.
My dad, with all his strength
Grasps my shoulder.
I glance at my brother.
The photographer shouts Smile!
Four radiant smiles,
The annual lie.
(Ashley Pudil, Seasons Greetings, The Limestone Review, 2016, p.69)
W hat we would like to do is change the world--make it a little simpler for people to feed, clothe, and shelter themselves as
God intended them to do. And, by fighting for better conditions, by crying out unceasingly for the rights of the workers, the
poor, of the destitute--the rights of the worthy and the unworthy poor, in other words--we can, to a certain extent, change the world;
we can work for the oasis, the little cell of joy and peace in a harried world. We can throw our pebble in the pond and be confident that
OPENING PRAYER its ever widening circle will reach around the world. We repeat, there is nothing we can do but love, and, dear God, please enlarge our
hearts to love each other, to love our neighbor, to love our enemy as our friend (Dorothy Day).
Readings from the Catholic Intellectual Tradition. Please join in the sung response after every 3 readings.
I t is in the nature of the common good that every single citizen has the right to share in italthough in different ways, depending
on his tasks, merits and circumstances. Hence every civil authority must strive to promote the common good in the interest of
all, without favoring any individual citizen or category of citizen. . . . Nevertheless, considerations of justice and equity can at times
demand that those in power pay more attention to the weaker members of society, since these are at a disadvantage when it comes to
defending their own rights and asserting their legitimate interests (Saint John XXIII, Pacem in Terris/ Peace on Earth n. 56).
T he music of the people is like a rare and lovely flower growing amidst encroaching weeds. Thousands pass it, while others
trample it under foot, and thus the chances are that it will perish before it is seen by the one discriminating spirit who will prize
it above all else. The fact that no one has as yet arisen to make the most of it does not prove that nothing is there (Antonin Dvorak).

Dear Loras College Community,
We offer our sincere gratitude to all of you for making the 4th Annual Legacy Symposium a success. People from across campus are
represented in this program; this day would not be possible without your planning, dedication, leadership, and collaboration. There are
many who deserve special recognition:
To Msgr. Barta, whose continued support of the Symposium allows it to flourish, and whose example inspires us;
To President Jim Collins and Academic Dean Rev. Douglas Wathier, for their leadership;
To Faculty and Staff who work with students every day to challenge them to become scholars and leaders;
To Students who strive for excellence and show us the joy of learning and growing together;
We offer special thanks to our student assistant, Natalie Droeske (19), whose professionalism and dedication were instrumental in our
planning and implementation.
Today is a day of celebration of what Loras College does best. Thank you!
