Mastery Lesson Plan- 2nd Grade- Seasons

Explanation of the Lesson:

This will be my first lesson focusing on the four seasons in the year. This lesson takes a
look at what people should wear, the weather, and the time of the year each season is. Students
will brainstorm some facts about the four seasons. For each season I will ask during which
months the season occurs and the various holiday that fall in that season. I will also have students
brainstorm what the weather is like and what activities they like to do during these seasons. The
students will work with a partner to make a collage of the four different seasons and they will be
able to see my collage as an example. After the pairs get done with their collages they will be
assigned to their poster of their favorite season and holiday. These posters will be individual
projects, students will have time to work on these in class and then can take them home if they
do not have enough time. The students will be able to see my poster as an example so they know
what I want on their poster. These posters will be presented in front of the class the next day so
they will be able to work on it at home if needed.

Rationale for the Lesson:

The seasons come and go as the year moves on. Seasons come from the rotation of the
Earth depending on what part of the Earth is closest to the sun. The seasons are taught in schools
so that students know what season is what and what some characteristics of each season is. This
lesson will give the students a better understanding of each season. By knowing the seasons each
student will know what season is when, activities that can be done in each season, the weather
and many other things.
SC 2.4.3 (NE) Students will observe simple patterns of change on Earth. SC 2.4.3.C (NE)
Student will describe simple seasonal weather indicators and how they impact student choices.
By doing this students will know the seasons and a lot of different characteristics of each season.
Having students study the seasons and their characteristics, will help students understand how
the years weather changes.

B. Assessment Plan - Method

Formative Assessment:
I will use formative assessments throughout this lesson. I will ask students many
times throughout the lesson if they understand it and they will use hand signs (hands up
in the air, on their head, and then down on the desk). And I will observe students while
they are working with their partners on their collages. I will ask students follow up
questions, for example what season does it snow?
The students will have a tiered exit ticket to complete at the end of the lesson. It
will be a sheet of paper that will ask students three different questions with room to
answer. Tier One will ask What is your favorite season?. Tier Two will ask Give an

example of at least one characteristic of your favorite season?. And Tier Three will ask
What is one holiday that happens in your favorite season?.

Checklist
Yes No
The student can state what their favorite
season is. (3 Points)
The student can give at least one example
of a characteristic of their favorite
season. (4 Points)

Collection of seasonal objects and pictures
Clothes for each season in a box
BrainPop Video and Quiz (Internet)

D. Lesson - Match
1. Procedures
Students interacting with new knowledge
a. Anticipatory Set:
I will put a KWL chart on each students desk. When students walk into the
Differentiation classroom and put their stuff away their bell ringer will be to fill out the KWL chart.
Strategy: They will know to do this bell ringer because it will say to do so on the board and I will
Anchoring also remind them. I will have each student write what they know about the four
different seasons. This will help them focus and be ready for the Seasons lesson.

b. Objective and Purpose (articulated to the student):

Today we are going to focus on the four different seasons that are in a
year. Our objectives for this lesson are to identify characteristics of the different
seasons, associate pictures with the four different seasons, group or sort different
facts about each season efficiently, and draw conclusions on the proper clothing

we should wear for each season. We will be discussing the topic as a class,
sharing with partners, and working by ourselves.
We are learning about the four seasons because it is important to know
about all the different seasons and know how we have different seasons. By
knowing the four different seasons you will know a lot of information for each
season such as when it is, what clothes you should wear in each season, the
weather in each season and many more different things.

c. ME --- Instructional Input:

I will ask the students to name the four seasons of the year and then I will
Big Nine write the name of each season on the board. Then I will show the SlideShare
Instructional presentation of the four seasons. The slides will talk about Autumn, Winter,
Strategy: Spring, and Summer. The months and characteristics of each season will be on
Notetaking each slide. Students will have to take notes while the presentation is being
presented. There will also be slides about the climate changing due to the rotation
of the Earth.
I will lecture from the SlideShare presentation and textbook for the first
half of class about the four seasons. The textbook will be used a lot so students
will have examples to look at with what the weather looks like, and different
Multiple
activities you can do in each season. I plan to use different pictures and objects
Intelligences: that classify the different seasons, as well as a video on BrainPop. The SlideShare
Visual-Spatial presentation has a lot of pictures that relate to the season that is on the slide.

TECH TOOL:
SlideShare Presentation
I will use this presentation to teach my students about the four seasons and
then teach out of the book also.

Skills Cues
Students will need note-taking tools such as a notebook and pencil.
Students will need to use their reading skills.
Students will need to use their listening skills.
Students will need to use their working together skills.
Students will need to use their creativity skills.

d. WE --- Modeling:
After the lecture I will bring out the box of clothes for each season. This
will be a model for students so they know what to wear for the different seasons
Multiple for their exit ticket. We will looks at the clothes together as a class and I will have
Intelligences: them come up in groups to look at the different outfits I have picked out. As the
Visual-Spatial groups come up I will have them choose what outfit they think goes with what
season.
The collage the students will make with a partner I will have a model of so
the students can see what I am looking for. I will have created a poster with my
favorite season and holiday and show the students so they will have an example
for their independent practice.

e. Monitoring:
While the students are working together with their partner to create a
collage I will make sure everyone knows what they are doing and see if anyone
has questions. I will also check for understanding by doing the hand signs
assessment to make sure they are comfortable with what they are doing. If they
are comfortable they will put their hands in the air. If they are not comfortable
they will put their hands on the desk. And if they are somewhat comfortable with
what they are doing they will put their hand on their head. If most students put
their hands on their desk I will go over the information of the seasons and reshow
them what their collage needs to looks like. I will also ask the students what they
are not understanding so I know what needs to be taught or reviewed again.

they are doing.

f. TWO --- Guided Practice

Differentiation I will write the different types of weather that my students experience in
Strategy: each season. Then I will pair my students up. Students can pick their own partner
Flexible and if there is not an even amount then one group will have three students. On a
Grouping paper, I will have my students draw pictures of the seasons to make a small
collage showing each of the four different seasons.

Mastery Lesson Plan- 2nd Grade- Seasons

g. YOU --- Independent Practice:

I will direct my students to create individual posters of a special event that
happens during their favorite season. For example, if a student loves Christmas,
he/she will draw pictures representing Christmas and the weather during
Christmas.

h. Closure:
I will ask my students to identify the four seasons again. Then I will ask for
Big Nine volunteers to explain why seasons change and what some characteristics of each
Instructional season is. As a class we will discuss what season we are in now and what holidays are
Strategy: coming up in that season. The students will be given an Exit Ticket, students will
Cooperative write what their favorite season is, a characteristic of that season (weather, activities,
Learning etc.), and then a holiday that happens in that season. By the end of this lesson the
students will be able to identify characteristics of the different seasons correctly. The
students will be able to associate pictures with the four different seasons proficiently. The
students will be able to group or sort different facts about each season efficiently. And the learner
will draw conclusions on the proper clothing they should wear for each season effectively.

Mastery Lesson Plan Reflection

Personally I think this assignment was one of the toughest assignments that we

have done so far. This lesson plan for mastery was easier than I thought it should be and I

definitely made it harder than it should have been. One of the things that I wish I would

have done was add more to my rough draft so I could have had more feedback on the

stuff I added to my final draft. This lesson plan for mastery took a lot of time and so

much planning.

I had a good idea of what I wanted to do my lesson plan over in the beginning so I

just had to explain myself more in depth. I wanted to create a science lesson plan because

I am not very good in science so I figured I should get used to something more science

related. Science can be taught in many different ways and so can seasons so this lesson fit

together perfectly.

The problems I ran into while designing this lesson plan was creating a lesson

plan for one day and not having it be too long. My main problem was picking what

Differentiation Strategies, Big Nine, and Multiple Intelligences to use. Another difficulty

I had was relating my lesson plan to the Nebraska Science State Standards. There were

not very many standards related to seasons that fit my grade level which is second grade.

In the end, I think this assignment was very important. It showed me how to

create a lesson plan for mastery that is very in-depth. The next time I will have to create a

lesson plan I will have a better idea of what I am doing. By doing this assignment I feel

like I have bettered myself as a teacher candidate since I know how to create an in-depth

lesson plan.
