Introduction

I. Hook: At the age of 45 my uncle unexpectedly died from problems related to alcohol abuse.
II. Thesis: Many people are affected by alcoholism and it is important to be aware of the
consequences and how to treat it because it may affect you or someone you know.
A. Preview: Alcoholism has many health concerns
B. Alcoholism has social concerns and can ruin families
C. Alcoholism can be treated

Transition: A lot of you might think that alcohol only has minor or temporary health concerns

Body
III. Alcoholism has many severe long term and short term consequences
A. Alcohol can cause a variety of heart problems including Cardiomyopathy, (Stretching and
drooping of heart muscle) Stroke, and hypertension (NIAAA, 2017)
B. Alcoholism can cause heavy damage to the liver potentially putting the individual at risk for
a vast amount of diseases including cirrhosis, steatosis, and alcoholic hepatitis (NIAAA,
2017)

Transition: Alcohol also has an impact on ones social life

IV. Alcohol abuse can lead to behavioral problems


A. Low doses of alcohol can cause impaired judgment, poor operating skills, and decreased
alertness (Washington and Lee University, 2017)
B. Drunk driving takes the lives of many every year.

V.

Transition: Alcoholism is treatable

VI. There are many treatment facilities all over the country to help people affected by alcoholism
A. Alcoholics have about a 40-60 percent chance of relapse (Alcohol Addiction Centers, 2017)
B. Treatments vary depending on the individual
C. Most Alcohol rehabilitation centers are covered by a persons insurance

Transition: Alcoholism can be very dangerous and severe, but treatment facilities are right
around the corner and help can be obtained.

Conclusion

VII. Alcoholism is dangerous and it is important to know the effects of alcoholism because you or
someone you know could potentially be at risk
A. Alcohol can have serious health consequences
B. Alcohol can lead to behavioral problems
C. Alcoholism is treatable and there are many treatment programs all over
VIII. Do you know someone affected by alcoholism? If so make sure the proper action is taken to
avoid any serious consequences
