SOL: 5.13 The student, using plane figures (square, rectangle, triangle,
parallelogram, rhombus, and trapezoid), will
a) develop definitions of these plane figures; and (Bloom's Level: Evaluate and Create)
Content Outline: All students should:
Understand that simple plane figures can be combined to make more
complicated figures and that complicated figures can be subdivided into simple
plane figures.

Day 1 Day 2

Today I will develop a definition of regular Today I will investigate the varying
polygons so that I can understand the characteristics of regular polygons so that
various quadrilateral shapes. Ill know Ive I can identify and compare different

Connection: Effective mathematicians are able to recognize four sided shapes are
quadrilaterals. As students complete the notesheet they will become familiar with the
characteristics of the shapes.

follow along and fill out definitions of quadrilateral quadrilaterals. The teacher will explain the game
shapes as well as drawing them. Scoot where students bring a piece of notebook
SMALL GROUP/CENTERS: paper and rotate around each desk with a note
10:15-11:05: Students will be called to the teacher card. Students will be at the designated desk for
table. Students will be given cut out shapes and about 2 minutes before they must switch.
they must work together to classify them as a kite, SMALL GROUP/CENTERS:
trapezoid, parallelogram, rectangle, rhombus, and 10:15-11:05:
square. Once students have completed classifying
these shapes, students will glue shapes onto a
chart that will be hung in the classroom.
-Students not at the teacher table will be
completing desk work as well as rotating through
different centers focused on preparing for the SOL
testing.
