Report writing guidelines

Following format shall apply for all lab reports to be submitted as a partial fulfilment of continuous
assessment of any course offered by the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering.

All pages except the cover page should be numbered in Arabic numbers
No borders are allowed in cover page and content pages.
No logos are permitted in cover page.
Cover page template and a sample cover page is given overleaf.
Content should be written in one side of the paper only.
Students are allowed to submit handwritten reports. In case type set reports are submitting,
use Time New Roman 11 pt. for content writing.
Contents of the Lab Report should be as follows.
1. Name of the experiment (as given in the lab sheet)
2. Learning outcomes (as given in the lab sheet)
3. Introduction This should be a summary of the introduction given in the lab sheet. Any
important equations theories should be mentioned here.
4. Preparatory tasks (if any). All calculations carried out before the experiment should be
given here.
5. Procedure Step by step format. Should be in past tense as the student has completed the lab
session. Diagrams should be provided in properly numbered figures with necessary
information.
6. Observations/Results Observation sheets, duly completed and approved by the instructor.
In case of computer and software labs, these can be computer generated files which are to be
separately submitted for evaluation.
7. Analysis of Results Post experiment calculations and/or graphs. If a series of calculation to
be done for a set of observations, only one sample calculation is required to be shown in the
lab report.
8. Conclusion Achievement of learning outcomes will be measured from the conclusion. In
case of verification of a theory, the student has to come to a conclusion whether, the
experiment results and calculated theoretical values tally up to a satisfactory level. For
computer and software labs, the overall achievement should be described according to the
introduction.
9. Discussion Discuss the facts given in the lab sheet. Include additional information if
required, answers to questions given in the lab sheet. The student should also discuss the
difficulties encountered in the experiment and how to overcome them. Students can provide
suggestions to improve the lab session. Always provide references for all the information
found outside the course material.
