MR. KELLEYS CLASSROOM EXPECTATIONS

Hello students and parents! This is a general overview of my classroom

expectations for the 2017-2018 school year. If you have any
questions/concerns, feel free to contact me via email.

GRADING
Most grading will happen via rubrics, as they are the most
effective way to determine mastery of a subject. That said, some
assignments (like quizzes, annotations, and Writers Notebook)
will be points-based. The system will be as follows, an A is
100-90, a B is 89-80, a C is 79-70, and a D is 69-60. Zeros
will only be given to work that I do not receive.
CHEATING/PLAGIARISM WILL NOT BE PERMITTED UNDER ANY
CIRCUMSTANCES! If a student is found guilty of plagiarism, they
will earn a zero for the assignment, a referral will be written,
and a phone call home will be made.

HOMEWORK
Homework will be collected the day it is due (do not count
on exceptions). Worksheets will be rare, more often outside
reading will be required. Annotations for longer reading
assignments will be checked bi-weekly, though frequency may be
adjusted depending on the material. Additionally, Writers
Notebook checks will happen at the end of each week.

TESTS/QUIZZES
There will be quizzes done on a weekly basis. DO NOT BE
ALARMED! These will be low-stakes (2-3 questions max) and will be
focused around retention and review of learned material. They
cannot be made up. Full-blown tests will be rare. In the event of
a test, students will have the entire class period to complete
the exam. Makeups for tests will occur on a student-by-student
basis.

PAPERS
Final papers will be the main way I assess student ability
and comprehension. Students will have at least two weeks to
complete their papers. There will be time in class to work on
these, but students are expected to work at home as well.

Workshops will occur before the final draft of the paper is due.
All papers will be done in MLA format (which we will go over in
class). To reiterate, PLAGIARISM WILL NOT BE PERMITTED UNDER ANY
CIRCUMSTANCES! (See GRADING for a more detailed explanation.)

ABSENCES
Absences will be handled on a student-to-student basis, with
consequences being based on circumstance. Students are expected
to make up what they missed--no exceptions. I will have any and
all worksheets in a folder in the back of the room organized by
date and class period. Notes can be acquired via fellow
classmates.

TARDIES
Students will be expected to come to class on time. Whatever
they miss will be on them (weekly quizzes will be completed at
the beginning of class). Repeated tardies will result in either a
referral or another equal disciplinary consequence.

PARTICIPATION
I will be looking for ACTIVE PARTICIPATION during class.
This does not necessarily mean that students will be required to
constantly speak, comment, and ask questions. I acknowledge that
some students are not comfortable with speaking up in class. As
long as students are engaging with the material (taking notes,
actively listening, etc.) there should be no problems with
participation. Further expectations will be outlined in class.

CELL PHONES/TECHNOLOGY
Cell phone use will only be permitted to look up information
related to class. I will clearly let students know when it is
appropriate to use their phones. All other cell phone use will
not be tolerated and rogue cell phones will be promptly
confiscated. (They can retrieve them from me after class.) That
being said, halfway through block periods students will have a
five minute break. During this time, cell phone use will be
permitted.
If there is a good reason for a student to be
checking their cell phone (family emergency), I expect
students to talk with me at the beginning of class to let me
know.
