Technical information should always be available to the foremen and mechanics, because their
careful and constant adherence to the instructions is essential to ensure vehicle road-worthiness and
safety. In addition, the normal basic safety precautions for working on motor vehicles must, as a
matter of course, be observed.

2 Radio navigation system RNS 850

The systems exchange data with each other via the optical MOST
bus. The systems taking part are:
The radio
the telephone
the navigation unit
the voice-activated control system
the TV tuner
the audio drives
the sound system
the data bus diagnostic interface
A connection to the other data bus systems in the vehicle is es
tablished by means of the data bus diagnostic interface -J533- .

How audio output functions:
Depending on the equipment and the actively selected source,
the digital audio signal can be generated by different control units.
If the DVD changer, for example, is selected as the source, it
reads out the audio signal on the CD.

How the dynamic noise compensation function works:

by

Prote AG.
The background noise is recorded by the interior microphone -
R74- , which is built into the roof console and is directly connected
to the digital sound package control unit -J525- or the radio -R- .
The degree of noise compensation can be adjusted. The input is
evaluated by means of the information electronics control unit 1 -
J794- and is then sent via the optical bus to the digital sound
package control unit -J525- or the radio -R- .
On the basis of these values, the digital sound package control
unit -J525- or the radio -R- adjusts the volume in the vehicle.
As the travelling speed increases, the volume of quite music in
creases more than the volume of loud music.
This process of adaptation always takes place on the basis of the
volume set by the customer. The volume is not reduced to a level
lower than that set by the customer.

2.2 Anti-theft component protection

When control devices of the radio/navigation system are re
placed, it is necessary to train the replaced control devices to
match the vehicle. If this is not done, component protection is ac
tivated for these control devices. Then, they do not function or
their functioning is severely restricted.
The following components of the radio/navigation system have
component protection:
Display unit for control device of front display and information
control panel -J685-
Information electronics control unit 1 -J794-
Radio -R-
DVD changer -R161-

2.6.7 Coding
Coding of components of the radio/navigation system RNS 850
takes place via the software version manager SVM by means of
an online connection to the vehicle diagnosis tester.
In the vehicle diagnosis tester, there is no information regarding
control unit coding.
This simplifies the coding process and prevents the control units
from functioning incorrectly due to incorrect coding.

2.7 Radio
The radio is installed in luggage compartment behind right side
panel trim.

Do not remove the protective caps on the ends of the optical

the respective terminal.

Installing:
Installation is carried out in reverse order of removal.
When control devices of the radio/navigation system are re

match the vehicle. If this is not done, component protection is ac

their functioning is severely restricted.

4.1.3 Software update

The software for the radio/navigation system RNS 850 can be
flashed by means of CD in the CD/ DVD drive of information elec
tronics control unit 1 -J794- .
Flashing of the MOST control units is also possible by means of
the SD card in the SD card reader of information electronics con
trol unit 1 -J794- or a USB stick plugged into the interface.

4.1.4 Coding
Coding of components of the radio/navigation system RNS 850
takes place via the software version manager SVM by means of
an online connection to the vehicle diagnosis tester.
In the vehicle diagnosis tester, there is no information regarding
control unit coding.
This simplifies the coding process and prevents the control units
from functioning incorrectly due to incorrect coding.

Remote controls (e.g. garage door opener) and cordless units

(e.g. keyboard) may only be used in the vehicle if the trans
mitted output is max. 100 mW.
An e identification is required for mobile two-way radios (ap
plies for Europe only).
Mobile telephones or other transmitting equipment (business
equipment) which are not original vehicle equipment parts
must have CE identification (applies to Europe only).
It is absolutely necessary to observe the manufacturer's op
erating and installation instructions for mobile telephones, two-
way radios and aerials.
The optimum unit range can be attained only by using an ex
ternal aerial.
When telephone and two-way radio systems are properly in
stalled, there is no danger to safety systems like, for example,
ABS or airbags. However, it is a prerequisite that there has
been no modification of their installation. Routing wiring par
allel to such systems must be avoided.
When mobile telephones or two-way radios are used, exces
sive electromagnetic fields may occur in the vehicle interior
whether or not the external aerial has been properly installed.
In this case, detrimental effects to health as well as malfunctions
of vehicle electronics cannot be ruled out.

14 Suppression measures

14.1 Suppression measures

All electrical consumers in the vehicle are individually suppressed
at factory.
This includes all sensors, actuators and all electrical motors in the
vehicles as well as the controllers in the control units which might
create high-frequency interference.
To suppress interference, electrical components such as capac
itors, coils and diodes are directly installed in the electrical com
ponents.
Interference-suppressing components are also installed in the
connector housings of electrical consumers.
The earth cables formerly employed for noise suppression are no
longer used because noise suppression measures need to be
applied very close to the sources of interference.
