Induction Motor

1. A 12 pole, 3 phase alternator is coupled to an engine running at 500 rpm.


It supplies an induction motor which has a full speed of 1440 rpm. Find slip
and number of poles of the motor.
(Ans: s=4% and poles=4)

2. The frequency of the emf in the stator of a 4 pole induction motor is 50


Hz, and the rotor is 1.5 Hz. What is the slip and speed of motor?
( Ans: s=3% and N = 1455rpm)

3. A 3 phase, 6 pole, 50 Hz induction motor has the slip of 1% at no load, and


3% at full load. Determine: (a) synchronous speed, (b) no load speed, (c)
full load speed, (d) frequency of rotor current at standstill.
(Ans: (a) 1000 (b) 990 (c) 970 (d) 50)

4. A three phase slip ring induction motor has a star connected rotor. It has an induced emf
of 60 volts on open circuit between the slip rings at stand still when the rated voltage is
supplied to the stator. The resistance and stand still reactance of rotor per phase are 0.5
and 5 respectively. Determine the rotor current per phase (i) when the rotor is at stand
still and connected to a star connected rheostat of resistance 5 and reactance of 0.5
per phase. (ii) when running at 4 % slip with rheostat short circuited.

5. A three phase 3 kV, 24 pole, 50Hz, star connected slip ring induction motor has a rotor
resistance of 0.015 and a stand still reactance of 0.265 per phase. Full load torque is
obtained at a speed of 245 rpm. Calculate (i) ratio of maximum to full load torque. (ii)
Speed at maximum torque. Neglect stator impedance. Ans ( (i) 1.59 (ii) 235.85 rpm)

6. A 15 HP, 4 pole, 220 volts three phase star connected, 1725 rpm induction motor has the
following parameters: R1 = 0.15 , R2 = 0.18 , X1 = 0.31 and X2 = 0.31 , friction
and windage loss = 240 watts. Determine (i) Slip at maximum torque and maximum
torque in synchronous torque (ii) slip at maximum power and maximum power (iii)
starting torque and starting current.
(Ans: (i) 0.282, 30700 Syn. Watts (ii) 0.204, 23400 w (iii) 17500 Syn. watts, 181 amps.)

7. A three phase, 50 Hz, 6 pole squirrel cage induction motor runs at 960 rpm on full load.
The stand still rotor resistance and reactance per phase are 0.01 ohm and 0.05 ohm
respectively. Express the maximum torque developed in terms of full load toque. Find the
slip at which the maximum torque occurs. (Ans: T max = 2.6Tf , 20%)

8. A three phase, 50 Hz, 4 pole slip ring induction motor runs at 1455 rpm on full load. The
rotor resistance per phase on stand still is 0.2 ohm. It is required to reduce the speed by
10% by inserting the series resistance in the rotor circuit. Determine the rotor resistance
per phase required. (Ans: 0.6467 ohm)
9. An 8 pole, 50 Hz slip ring induction motor runs at a slip of 2.67% on full load. The rotor
resistance per phase of the winding is 0.2 ohm. What external resistance per phase must
be added in the rotor circuit so that the motor now runs ate a slip of 17.33% such that the
torque remains same in both the cases. (Ans: 1.1 ohm)

10. 14. An 8 pole 50 Hz, three phase induction motor runs at a speed of 720 rpm when
delivering full load torque. Its stand still rotor resistance and reactance are 0.1 ohm and
0.6 ohm per phase respectively. An additional resistance of 0.5 ohm per phase is inserted
in the rotor circuit to control the speed. Calculate the speed at which the motor runs now
with full load torque remaining the same. (Ans: 570 rpm)

11. The power input to a 3 phase induction motor is 60 KW. The stator loses total 1 KW. Find
the total mechanical power developed and the rotor copper losses per phase if the motor
is running with the slip of 3%. ( Ans: P=57.23 KW, loses 0.59 KW)

12. A 25 h.p., 6 pole, 50 hz, 3 phase slip ring induction motor runs at 960 revolution per
minute on full load with a rotor current per phase of 35 A. Allowing 250 W for the rotor
copper loss in the short circuit gear, and 1000 W for mechanical losses, find the resistance
per phase of the three phase rotor winding. ( Ans: .15476 ohm)

13. The stator loss of a 3 phase induction motor is 2 KW. When the power input is 90 KW,
What will be the rotor mechanical power developed and the rotor copper loss if the motor
is running at a slip of 4%. (Ans: P= 84.48 KW, loss 3.52 KW)

14. The rotor resistance and standstill reactance per phase of a 3 phase induction motor are
0.05 ohm and 0.2 ohm respectively. What should be the value of external resistance per
phase to be inserted in the rotor circuit to give maximum torque at starting? ( Ans: 0.05)

15. A 6 pole, 50 Hz, 3 phase induction motor develops a maximum torque of 30 Nm at 960
r.p.m. Determine the torque exerted by the motor at 5% slip. The rotor resistance per
phase is 0.6 ohm. ( Ans: 29.97 Nm)

16. A 3 phase, 50 Hz, 6 pole induction motor runs at 940 r.p.m. and delivers 7 KW output.
What starting torque will the motor develop when switched directly on the supply, if
maximum torque developed at 800 r.p.m. ? The friction and windage losses total 840 W.

( Ans: 55.65 Nm)

17. The rotor resistance and reactance of a 4 pole, 50 Hz, 3 phase slip
ring induction motor are 0.4 ohm and 4 ohm per phase respectively.
Calculate the speed at maximum torque and the ratio of maximum
torque to starting torque. ( Ans: 1350 rpm, 5.05)
18. In the problem number 18, what value should the resistance per
phase have so that the starting torque is half of maximum torque?
( Ans: r= 0.807 ohm)

19. A small 3 phase induction motor has the short circuit current equal
to 5 times the full load current. Determine the starting current and
starting torque if the resistance starter is used to reduce the impressed
voltage to 60% of normal voltage. The full load slip id 0.05.
( Ans: I= 3Ifl, T=0.4f Tfl)

20. A cage induction motor when started by means of star delta starter
takes 180% of full load line current and develops 35% of full load
torque at starting. Calculate the starting torque and current in full load
values, if an auto transformer with 75% tapping were employed.
( Ans: (a) 9.72, (b) 0.59)

21. A cage induction motor has a full load slip of 5%. The motor starting
current at rated voltage is 5.5 times the full load current. Find the
tapping on the auto transformer starter which should give full load
torque at start. Also find the line current.
