1. Introduce the Academic Health and Academic Equity Grant


a. This is a CDC-DASH Grant or Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and
Division for Adolescent School Health
b. The Timeline: We are in year 4 of this 5 year project
c. There are 8 school districts in MN that are apart of this grant
d. The goals for this grant are
i. Decrease HIV/STD Risk Behaviors
ii. Increase Access to Sexual Health Services
iii. Increase school Connectedness for all students, including GLBT students
e. This project focuses on school systems and ensuring sustainability. There are
three approaches to accomplishing the goals (what the money issued for):
i. Exemplary Sexuality and Health Education (ESHE) - Scientific researched
evidence based sexual health education
ii. Sexual Health Services (SHS) - HIV test, STD testing, pregnancy test,
birth control, etc.
iii. Safe and Supportive Environments (SSE) *Must address GLBT students -
policies, procedures, and activities designed to prevent bullying and
violence, and promote health and safety.

2. Share our implementation plan for 2016-2017


a. Every year the school district makes an implementation plan and this year our
focus as a committee is to give resources to staff and students and help with the
Health and Wellness fair. Resources include trainings, webinars, modules,
professional developments, etc.

a. Share why this topic and information is important - MN Student data survey
b. Rainbow Health Initiative MN
i. LGBTQ people are disproportionately burdened by tobacco use, mental
health issues, homelessness, sexual violence, food insecurity, and a lack
of access to culturally competent medical care. There is a serious need
for education, prevention, and treatment efforts in all areas of LGBTQ
health. - Rainbow Health Initiative
ii. Im trans and it would make me more comfortable seeking medical
treatment if I know that staff had undergone training & I wont be asked
inappropriate/ unnecessary questions. survey respondent RHI - how
can we correlate this quote to our staff and how we speak to students?
c. CDC - What Schools Can Do
i. For youth to thrive in their schools and communities, they need to feel
socially, emotionally, and physically safe and supported. A positive school
climate has been associated with decreased depression, suicidal feelings,
substance use, and unexcused school absences among LGBQ students.
