INTRODUCTION

In this technology era, our country Malaysia has invented smart school program
to transform its educational system, in line and with support from nations drive
to fulfill vision 2020. This Vision calls for sustained, productivity-driven growth,
which will be achievable only with a technologically literate, critically thinking
work force prepared to participate fully in the global economy of the 21st
century.

At the same time, Malaysias National Philosophy of Education calls for

developing the potential of individuals in a holistic and integrated manner, so as
to produce individuals who are intellectually, spiritually, emotionally, and
physically balanced and harmonious. The catalyst for this massive
transformation will be technology supported Smart Schools, which will improve
how the educational system achieves the National Philosophy of Education, while
fostering the development of a work force prepared to meet the challenges of
the next century. Transforming the educational system will entail changing the
culture and practices of Malaysias primary and secondary schools, moving away
from memory-based learning designed for the average student to an education
that stimulates thinking, creativity, and caring in all students, caters to individual
abilities and learning styles, and is based on more equitable access. It will
require students to exercise greater responsibility for their own education, while
seeking more active participation by parents and the wider community.

The Smart Schools initiative is one of the seven flagship applications that are
part of Malaysias Multimedia Super Corridor (MSC) project. The Government of
Malaysia aims to capitalise on the presence of leading-edge technologies and the
rapid development of the MSCs infrastructure to jumpstart deployment of
enabling technology to schools. This will be done by creating a group of 90 pilot
Smart Schools by 1999 that will serve as the nucleus for the eventual nation-
wide rollout of Smart School teaching concepts and materials, skills, and
technologies. By 2010, all 10,000 of Malaysias primary and secondary schools
will be Smart Schools.

MAIN GOALS

In this report also has been highlight the objectif or main goals of the smart
school. A Smart School will evolve over time, continuously developing its
professional staff, its educational resources, and its administrative capabilities.
This will allow the school to adapt to changing conditions, while continuing to
prepare students for life in the Information Age. To function effectively, the Smart
School will require appropriately skilled staff, and well-designed supporting
processes.
The Information Age is basically to prepare student in an intergrated strategy to
provide all-round development with provision for individual abilities, offering a
broad curriculum for all, with electives, that is vertically integrated,
multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary.Secondly, emphasise intellectual,
emotional, spiritual, and physical growth, concentrating on thinking, developing
and applying values, and using correct language across the curriculum. Then,
produce a technologically literate work force that can think critically,
encouraging thought and creativity across the curriculum and applying
technology effectively in teaching and learning. As for democratise education,
they offering equal access to learning opportunities and accommodating differing
learning abilities, styles, and paces. Lastly, increase the participation of
stakeholders, creating awareness of their roles and responsibilities and
developing the skills they need for that.

MAIN GOALS

In this report also has been highlight the objectif or main goals of the smart
school. A Smart School will evolve over time, continuously developing its
professional staff, its educational resources, and its administrative capabilities. In
order to keep up with upcoming technology era there is a need to start
educating the young one with technology and with more holistic education. This
will allow the school to adapt to changing conditions, while continuing to prepare
students for life in the Information Age. To function effectively, the Smart School
will require appropriately skilled staff, and well-designed supporting processes.

The Information Age is basically to prepare student in an intergrated strategy to

provide all-round development with provision for individual abilities, offering a
broad curriculum for all, with electives, that is vertically integrated,
multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary.Secondly, emphasise intellectual,
emotional, spiritual, and physical growth, concentrating on thinking, developing
and applying values, and using correct language across the curriculum.Emotional
and spiritual are one of the subpoint for the goals of smart school that instilmoral
and religious values and causes emphasise adaptability, team-player
characteristics, emotional balance and emotional intelligence. Moreover, commun
ication skill is alsoimportant for student that more effective oral and written
communication in Malay andEnglish as a second laguages. Its also emphasise
multiple, interpersonal skill and networking Then, produce a technologically
literate work force that can think critically, encouraging thought and creativity
across the curriculum and applying technology effectively in teaching and
learning. This is because job nowadays demand a high quality and skilled worker
espescially in technology itself .Therefore, smart school will have the the
responsibility to educate and prepare students for their real life after school .In
smart school, the students will be taught of thinking across curiculum. After that,
smart school also initaited to students get used to the technology-environment
to learn anything or work with. As for democratise education, they offering equal
access to learning opportunities and accommodating differing learning abilities,
styles, and paces. Lastly, increase the participation of stakeholders, creating
awareness of their roles and responsibilities and developing the skills they need
for that.

Teaching and learning process were included the process of curriculum,

pedagogy, assessment and teaching-learning materials in a mutually reinforcing,
coherent manner. The curriculum process will help student
achieve overall balanced development and integrateknowledge, skills, values,
and correct use of language. Then, Smart School pedagogy willseek to make
learning more interesting, motivating, stimulating and meaningful. It is
alsoinvolve the children mind, spirit and bodies in the learning process. The
strategies in SmartSchool pedagogy were use an appropriate mix of learning
strategies to ensure mastery
of basic competenciesand promote holistic development,
accommodate individual differentlearning styles, so as to boost performance and
foster a classroom atmosphere that iscompatible with different teaching-learning
strategies. Therefore, the benefit of Smart School assessment is teachers,
students and parents will be able to access on-
line assessment items. It will causes increasing of livingcertification, which not
only attest to students cumulative accomplishments but will also beopen to
continued improvement on a lifetime basis. The new teaching strategies will
needteaching-learning materials designed that will accommodate student differin
g needs and abilities. It is will lead students to take greater responsiblility for
managing adn directing their own learning

TEACHING AND LEARNING COMPONENT IN SMART SCHOOLS

The teaching and learning component comprises four areas:

1. Curriculum: designed to help students achieve overall and balanced development.

2. Pedagogy: allows for appropriate mix of learning strategies to ensure mastery of basic
competencies and promotion of holistic development.

3. Assessment: designed to give accurate feedback of students readiness, progress,

achievement and aptitude.

4. Teaching and learning materials: cognitively challenging and motivating by

combining the best of network based, teacher-based, and courseware materials.

CURRICULUM
The smart school curriculum shall be meaningful, social responsible,
multicultural, reflective, holistic, global, open-ended, goal-based and technological. It
shall promoteholistic learning, allowing children to progress at their own pace, and
catering forstudents varying capabilities, interest and needs. It will seek to ensure that
children areeducated with critical and creative thinking skills, inculcated with
appropriate values, andencouraged to improve their own language proficiency. New
elements that found inSmart School curriculum are purposed on all-round
development of students appropriatefor this era. Thus, the curriculum will be designed
to:

1. Help students achieve overall balanced development integrate knowledge, skills,

values, and correct use of language. Domain All round development Effective oral
and written communication in Malay. Communication English as a second
language. Emphasis multiple languages, interpersonal skills and networking.
Focus on acquiring knowledge. Focus on searching, Cognitive generating, and
using knowledge with an emphasis on problem-solving and creativity. Instill
moral and religious values. Emphasis adaptability, Affective team player
characteristics, emotional balance and emotional intelligence. Physical Instill
social responsibility and consciousness of health and environmental issues.
Emphasis a global orientation and inculcate work place skills and attitudes.

2. State explicitly intended learning outcomes for different ability levels.

3. oster the knowledge, skills, and attitudes appropriate for success in the
Information Age.4. Offer multidisciplinary, thematic, and continuous learning

PEDAGOGY
The smart school pedagogy will seek to make learning more interesting,
motivating, stimulating and meaningful. This component involves the children minds, spirit,
andbodies in the learning process. It also builds basics skill to prepare children for
greaterchallenges over time and cater for a range of needs and capabilities among the
students.The pedagogy shall:

1. Use an appropriate mix of learning strategies to ensure mastery of basic competencies

and promote holistic development. Involves specific learning goals Process Active
learning process, where learner constructs meaning - Continuous - Personalized
Alone, in pairs, or in small teams with an expert (teacher or community member), a
facilitator (teacher assistant, volunteer or Modes student), non-human resources
(hands-on materials, computer- based resources, multimedia resources, or print
materials) At a site in the community, a computer-based multimedia simulation, a
hands-on learning lab, a meeting room or library. Authentic, often in real life
environments, with real world challenges interdisciplinary: - Specific knowledge
Tasks - General skills such as transfer of information across settings, negotiation and
interpersonal skills, decision making skills Mastery of a task before progressing to
next task Periodic performance mastery assessment More responsibility to learner for
directing and managing own learning. (Source: Smart school conceptual blueprint).
2. Accommodate individual different learning styles, so as to boost performance.
Differentiating Teacher- Teacher as Teacher as Student- Factors centred mentor and
coach or centred model Facilitator Establishment of learning by teacher.

3. Faster a classroom atmosphere that is compatible with different teaching-learning

strategies.

- Creating an atmosphere of respect and rapport.

- Establishing a culture for learning
- Managing classroom procedures
- Managing student behavior
- Organizing physical space

ASSESSMENT.

The smart school assessment system will be distinctly different from current system tohelp
realize the National Philosophy of Education. It shall be element-based andcriterion-
referenced to provide more holistic and accurate picture of studentsperformance.
Teachers, students, and parents will be able to access on-line assessmentitems. Smart
school assessment will be flexible and learner-friendly, while assuring the quality of the
assessment information by using multiple approaches and instruments. It will lead to
living certification, which not only attest to a students cumulativeaccomplishments but
will also be open to continued improvement on a lifetime basis. Thescope of assessment in
the Smart School is holistic and gives various informationregarding the students learning
styles and abilities.

TEACHING-LEARNING MATERIALS.

Smart school will need teaching-learning materials designed for the new strategies.
Thesematerials will accommodate students differing needs and abilities, resulting in
furtherrealization of their capabilities and potential, and allow students to take
greaterresponsibility for managing and directing their own learning. The materials should
becognitively challenging, attractive, motivates students to learn and encourages
activeparticipation. In addition, the materials will be acquired from a wide range of sources.

Conceptual selection and evaluation guidelines for teaching-learning materials will cover 5
main criteria :

- Cosmetic Adequacy
- Instruction Adequate
- Curriculum Adequate
- Technical Adequate
- Cost effectiveness

The Smart School integrates solution that involves the curriculum, pedagogy,
assessment, educational materials, and technology as an enabler. The Smart School is one of
the most forward-looking ICT-mediated learning initiatives, which attempts to reinvent the
teaching learning processes in the world. Smart School created systemically reinvented in
term of teaching and learning practice and school management in order to prepare student for
Information Age. In the Information Age, a Smart School will evolve over time continuously
and developing its professional staff. Smart school have come across many advantages to
students and teachers. There are many advantages of smart school, some of them are :

Improves the academic performance : It is often seen that the students studying in a
smart class get a better result than the students studying in a regular class. This is so
because the understanding ability in the students studying in a smart classroom is way
more than other students. The topic becomes clearer and the base of the subject becomes
stronger. Obvioulsy, the students with better hold of the subject and with strong basic
knowledge of the subject will score more in exams.

Makes learning enjoyable : if we go and look in a regular classroom, the students

are feeling very sleepy. Some of the students are not even listening to the teacher.
They are busy talking with their friends. In short, the class becomes very boring for
them. But it is not so in a smart classroom. The use of smart technology in the class
makes the classroom a fun room. It makes learning a fun process. The students who
do not like to go to schools also starts enjoying in the school.

Communication : The technology used in a smart classroom makes video

conferencing possible in the classroom itself. In this way, the students can
communicate with the person who is expert in the subject. In various schools and
colleges with the facility of smart schools, guest lectures are organized weekly in
which the students can communicate with the experts such as professors of IITs and
IIMs or the people engaged in research work. This provides the students with extra
information about their subjects which beyond the scope of the text books. The
students get to know about the ongoing issues related to their subjects. They get
acquinted with the upcoming technology and theories. This proves very beneficial for
them in the near future.

Health friendly : There are some teachers who are very sensitive towards the use of
chalk or markers. Some of them experiences skin allergies when they write with chalk
and some are allergic to chalk dust. Some teachera are not comfortable with the smell
of the ink used in the markers. For these teachers smart classroom are advantageous.
There is no or very less use of markers or chalk in a smart classroom. The teaching is
done by using digital or e-resources. So, there is no chance of allergy.

Advantageous for the absentees : If students who studied in a regular classroom uis
absent for one day, it becomes difficult for him to gather all the notes of the classes
he missed. Also, it becomes difficult for the teacher to explain the previous topics for
the students who were absent. The students then take a shortcut method and get the
notes photocopied from other students. In this way, the students do not understand
anything from the classes he missed. In smart calssroom, the lecturers are recorded.
Whenever a student is absent he can anytimr see the recorded lecturer. These
recorded lectures are also uploaded on the internet which can be acessed by the
students anytime by a login id and password. The notes are also in digital form, so
they can be easily provided to the students.

With so many advantages of the smart school, there are few disadvantages also which
makes the use of smart technology quite limited. They are :

Cost : The technology used in the smart school is very expensive. All the
school cannot afford it. Even the schools which can afford it get over the
budget after buying it. Some school often take loans to buy the smart
technology. Consequently, the fees of the school are increased to meet the cost
of the equipments. The admission fees of the schools with smart classrooms
also hikes. All parents cannot afford such expensive education for their
children. Every child cannot get access to the smart classrooms.

Maintenance : Like all electronic gadgets, the gadgets used in smart

classrooms require proper maintenance. The rooms in which these gadgets are
installed should be free from dust particles and should not face direct sunlight
otherwise the gadgets will become faulty. Also these equipments release a lot
of heat in the surrounding so the rooms should be air conditioned. Technical
staff has to be appointed for the maintenance of devices. This further adds to
the cost. The devices also need to be updated regularly which is a very time
consuming process.

Skilled faculty : All teachers cannot use smart technology for teaching. The
teachers have to be traines before they can start teaching in a smart classroom.
The teachers are trained to use the technology in an effective manner. They are
also trained to handle faults in the gadgets. This training also cost much. If the
teacher are not properly trained the technology would become disturbing
factor rather than become helpful.

A smart school increase the interest of the students in studies. Students tend to learn
more. With so many advantages and a few disadvantages smart school can still be
considered good for the students. Due to some disadvantages, we cannot ugnore the
advantages of the smart school. All the disadvantages have a solution except for the
disadvantages of the cost involved. But in the coming few decades, the rise in
technology would definitely decrease the cost of these devices to some extent.
Moreover, the new inventions in the fields of computer science and tehcnology would
definitely make teaching and learning even much better. The government schools
should also employ smart technology in their classes so that all the students can have
access to smart classroom.

COMPARISON BETWEEN SMART SCHOOL AND NORMAL SCHOOL
