MATLAMAT (GOALS) :
To provide the knowledge and understanding on principles and practices of construction and contract
law, contract administration procedures and cost estimation in building and civil engineering
projects.
SINOPSIS (SYNOPSIS) :
Understanding in construction and contract laws and contract administration procedures in building
construction is essential in order to ensure the success of project. This course introduces students to
the construction law, contract law and common contract administration procedures in building and
civil engineering projects. This course will also equip the students with knowledge in preparing cost
estimation for projects. Scopes of study includes introduction to construction industry and contract
management; introduction to construction and contracts laws including elements and discharge of
contract and remedies for breach of contract; construction contract procedures; classification of
construction contracts; cost estimation and quantity measurement; and build-up rate calculation.

10 Submission: Project
14 Submission: Assignment
Project (15%) - Working in group, students are required to acquire a contract document (completed
with drawings) of a building project. Using the drawings, students are required to (i) estimate project
cost using preliminary estimating techniques, (ii) calculate build-up rate of specified work elements,
and (iii) perform taking off quantities for specified work elements of the project. Each group must
produce and submit a report that compiles all the three tasks.
Assignment (15%) - Students are required to explore on contract administration procedures based on
specified clauses in the PWD standard form of contract and relate with the principles of construction
and contract laws learned in the course as well as the acquired contract documents (for the above
group project). A report on this assignment must be submitted.
