This will be assessed by observation, checks for understanding, and a wrap up at
the end of the lesson.
Concomitant Objective: Students will engage with one another in a fun and
exciting way while staying physically active.
Time Procedures Followed Materials
Warm Up: Have the students jog a lap around the
__1___ gym. Students will be running a lot for the activity
Minutes
so there is no need for a long warm up.
Transition: Tell the students to line up on the
___30__ green line.
Seconds

Set Induction: How many of you guys enjoy

__1___ playing football? Thats great, I love to play too!
Minutes
Now today we are going to be doing an activity
together that is a mix between football and
capture the flag. The activity we are playing today
is called Capture the Cones.
Learnable Piece: For this activity, we will be
___1__ working together with teammates. Being a good
Minutes
teammate involves communication, listening, and
helping one another during the activity. During
the activity I will not only be keeping track of the
time but will be watching to see what kind of
strategies and elements of teamwork that you
work on.
Presentation of New Material/Directions:
__2___
Have the students partner up with someone next
Minutes
to them and pick one student to be #1 and the
other to be #2.
In this activity, we will have team 1 and team 2
on opposite sides of our playing area.
Our playing area will be one half of the gym, with
the green and white lines being the borders of
play.
Each team has four cones in their cone zone.
The goal of this activity is to capture the other
teams cones and bring them to their own cone
zone.
Each team will have two balls that will be in play,
and these balls will be used to knock down the
cones.
For a team to capture a cone, teammates will
throw the ball to one another to advance it down
the court. Whoever has a ball cannot move, and
must throw it to a teammate.
When the ball reaches the opposite end of the
court, team members have the chance to throw
the ball at one of the cones to try and knock it
down.
If a student successfully knocks down a cone, the
ball gets thrown to another teammate and the
student that knocked down the cone brings the
cone to their cone zone.
If a ball drops to the ground during play, that ball
is out for the rest of the round.
This activity focuses on speed and teamwork, so
there will not be any defense or guarding the
cones since students need to work together in
order to move the ball down the court.
Whichever team has the most cones at the end of
the round wins that round.
Safety:
Since there will be a lot of running and activity in
this game, it is important that we watch where
we are going, and space each other out.
When throwing the ball to another team member,
make sure that you communicate with them
before throwing the ball so they can prepare.
Never throw a ball at someones head or at a
fast speed.
Check for Understanding:
What happens if a ball gets dropped on the
ground?
If you have the ball, are you allowed to move?
What happens if a cone gets knocked down?

Transition: After describing the activity, put team 1 on Cones: 8 with

__15___ the left side of the court and team 2 on the right side of four on each
Seconds
the court. side
Activity: Students will all begin spread out on their
___1-2__ side of the court, and one team member on each 2 heavier
Minutes
team will start with a ball. 4 cones will be lined up balls
on opposite sides of the gym, right in front of the
mats. When I say go, students will begin to play
the activity. Each round will be about 1 minute.
When I say stop, the students will freeze and
count how many cones are on each side.

Possible Modifications: If there is enough time, add a 2 heavier

___1__ second ball for each team in the second round. If the balls
Minutes
cones are too difficult to knock down, have the students
capture the cone if they are able to hit it.
___.5__ Lesson Review: How was your team able to work
Minutes together to capture the cones? What was your
favorite strategy or part of the activity?
