issue.Theywilltalkabouthowwantsandneedsareaproblemwiththedistributionofgoodsandthey
willdiscusshowandwhythiscanbeaproblem.Afterthisdiscussionthestudentswillbeginworkingon
aTcharttodistinguishbetweenwantsandneeds.Studentswillcutoutpicturesfrommagazinesorprint
outsanddeterminewhethertheybelongasawantorneed.Afterthisactivitythestudentswilleach
receivedifferentamountsofbeadsandhavetheopportunitytobuydifferentitemsthatarelaidouton
frontcarpet.Afterthestudentsbuytheitemstheywantandneedthentheywillcometothefrontcarpetto
discusswhattheyobservedduringtheactivityandhowtheymadedecisionstobuyvariousitems.They
willalsotalkaboutthedifferentwaysofthinkingtheyusedandwilllearnthenamesofthosewaysof
thinking.

Theteacherwillhavethestudentsatthefrontcarpetandthestudentsandteacherwilldiscuss
whytheythinkwantsandneedscouldbeasustainabilityissue.
Theclasswillalsotalkabouthowwantsandneedsareaproblemwiththedistributionofgoods
theywilldiscusshowandwhythiscanbeaproblem.
Theteacherwillthendescribetheactivitythatthestudentswillbeworkingon.
Afterstudentslistentothedirectionsofthefirstactivityandlistentobehavioralexpectationsthey
willbecalledbyrowsthathavegoodbehavior.
ThepaperpasserswillpassouttheTcharttoeachstudentandtheywillwritetheirnameatthe
topofthepaper.
Theteacherwillthenpassoutmagazinesandthepaperprintoutstothetableteamsandthe
studentscanbegincuttingouttheprints.
Studentswillcutoutpicturesfrommagazinesorprintoutsanddeterminewhethertheybelongas
awantorneed.
ThestudentswillworkonaTcharttodistinguishbetweenwantsandneeds.
Afterthisactivitythestudentswilleachreceivedifferentamountsofbeadsandhavethe
opportunitytobuydifferentitemsthatarelaidoutonfrontcarpet.
Thehousewillbeworth10beads,theelectricitywillbeworth12beads,waterwillbeworth5
beads,foodwillbeworth6beads,abedwillbeworth8beadsandsoonfortheneeds.Forthe
wantstoyswillbeworth5beads,videogameswillbeworth7beads,acarwillbeworth10
beads,acomputerwillbeworth8beadsandsoonwiththewants.
Theteacherwillstandatthefrontoftheroomwiththeitemsandcollectthebeadmoney.
Eachtableteamwillcomeupandbuytheitemstheywant.
Afterthestudentsbuytheitemstheywantandneedthentheywillcomebacktothefrontcarpet
todiscusswhattheyobservedduringtheactivityandhowtheymadedecisionstobuyvarious
items.
Theteacherwillthentalktothestudentsabouthowtheyallhaddifferentamountsof
beads/moneyandsosomeofthestudentswereabletobuymorethantheyneedwhileotherswere
notabletobuytheirneeds.
Thestudentswillalsotalkaboutwhatkindsofthinkingtheyused.
Theywilllearnthenamesofthosewaysofthinkinganddiscussthem.
Aftertheywillhearaboutthelessonforthenextdayaswellastalkaboutthefieldtrip.
