Light Painting - Long Exposure

In your groups, you will take turns being the photographer, director, and model. Each student
should submit two of their favorite images to the Schoology assignment entitled, Painting
with Light Classwork by the end of class.

Before we turn off the ambient light:


- Setup your tripod with camera on top
- Adjust your fame/composition
- Start with ISO
- Set ISO between 100 - 200 in order to reduce noise
- Move on to adjust your aperture to capture a large depth of field
- Set f-stop around f/ 16 - f/ 22
- Finally, adjust your shutter speed to a slow setting
- Set between 15 seconds ( 15 ) & 30 seconds ( 30)

In the dark:
- Shine light into lens to make adjustments to exposure if necessary
- While still shining the light into the lens set your auto focus on your starting point.
- Turn light source off.
- Click the shutter release button to capture an image.
- Start drawing for (length of shutter speed).
- When you hear the sound of the shutter click close your images is complete.
- Click the square with a triangle inside to view your image.

Ideas to Experiment with:


- Paint an abstract scene with different colored lights
- Write your name
- Outline your classmate or a product around the room
- Create a monster painting
- Switch up your the light source

Vocabulary:

Light Painting- Photo technique that involves a moving light source while taking a long

exposure in camera.

Long Exposure- Adjusting the cameras shutter speed to a slow setting to capture an image.

Also referred to as dragging the shutter.

Ambient Light- light that exists in a scene aka natural light or existing light.

Shutter Speed- The length of time the lens shutter is open, exposing the digital sensor to light.
