Hunt Math 6

Unit 5 5.4 Area of Irregular Shapes Lesson 3/13/17

New Jersey Student Learning Standards for Mathematics:

6.G.A.1 - Find the area of right triangles, other triangles, special quadrilaterals, and polygons by composing into
rectangles or decomposing into triangles and other shapes; apply these techniques in the context of solving
real-world and mathematical problems.

Objectives: Students will be able to:

break down composite figures into rectangles and triangles to find the area.
Student Friendly Objective: Today I will be able to find the area of composite figures . I know Ive got
it when I can break up a figure into rectangles and triangles and find the area of each piece.

Materials:
- SMARTboard presentation, Home Link 5.4 , notes handout

Do Now: - Take out and copy down HW into agenda Homework:

- Worksheet on finding area of irregular shapes (2 - Home Link 5.4
questions)

Procedures:
1. Teacher will take attendance and check in homework as students complete the Do Now.
2. Review answers to Do-now (Irregular shapes area). Discuss with students how we can break up
the irregular shapes into rectangles and triangles to solve for the area. Remind students that they
need to show each formula they use in order to get full credit.
3. Lesson: Distribute composite figure hand out. You can see that the first two figures have been
broken up into two rectangles for you. You must find the area of each section and then add them
together. On the bottom the shapes are not split for you. You must split them up and the areas
on your own. Give students time to split first figure.
How many of you split it horizontally?
How many split it vertically?
How many would find the area of the big rectangle and then subtract out the missing
piece?
4. Discussion: Any of those strategies would work. You must make sure you find the missing
dimensions you need. Look at the lines that are parallel to the line you need to find your missing
measure. The next figure cant be cut into two rectangles. You must cut it into a rectangle and a
triangle. Again you will have to find the missing dimension you need and use make sure to divide
your triangle area by two. Students will continue to work together to split the figures into
rectangles and triangles to find the area.
5.Independent Classwork: Students that finish early can start working on pages 222-223 in their
math journals.
Closure: Discuss with a partner the steps you would use to find the missing dimension of a figure you
split up.

Formative Assessments:
Question/Answer - Teacher will clarify concepts for students with questions.
Class work Teacher will monitor student progress/understanding while walking around the
room.
