By 2009 Chinese tourists surpass the French and rank 4th in the international tourist
spenders, with a 21% increase in expenditure on tourism in 2009, during the financial
crisis.

The Wall Street Journal reports that spending of Chinese tourists increased by
64% last year, over 2009. Spending for China thus broke into the $1 billion category in
2009, along with Australia and France (but the latter two countries increases were
much less spectacular: up 32% and 6%, respectively). (Lena, Astronaut Travel, 2011)
While the industry has suffered two years of declining fundamentals and endured
the drag of a global economic recession, we believe that the worst is over and the
light at the end of the tunnel is not only visible but growing larger each day (M.

and for tourists heightened interest in the countrys geology due to the volcanic
eruptions
