Blige, M.J. Menzies, L.T. Saadiq, R. (2009). I Can See in Color.

[Recorded by Mary J. Blige]. Precious. [CD]. New York, New
York City: Universal Music.

In the recording the writers use lyrics that display a feeling

of overcoming struggles in which the main

character of the novel does by overcoming her poverty

and tragic situation she is given by life and strives to

provide a better life for her family as family. Blige, Menzies,

and Saadiq use lyrics such as I got a new song to sing

which creates a feeling within the audiences that gives you

a essence of rebirth ,and new coming. Within the text

Precious faces many trials which will push her to limits. In

which some may see as unbearable ,and this records

embodies the relief , and comfort that she has finally

overcame the situation she was placed in. Sources such as

this are essential to creating a source of evidence that may

help provide a concrete foundation to a persuasive

argument of proving my case of why the novel is

influential.
Daniels, L. Magness, G. Siegel-Magness, S. (Producers), & Daniel L.
(Director), (2009). Precious [Motion Picture]. United States:
Harpo Productions.
Within the film the Directors and Producers give a visual

representation of the novel which allows reader to

see a physical representation of the details. Director Lee

uses the novel as guide to recreate the scenes such as

Precious stealing food to her dealing with her abusive

mother who constantly disrespects her. Lee has written,

produced, directed, and acted in african american films

which is not an easy task that shows his understanding to

interpret literature ,and not only write it but to bring it to

life within his films. This film will be essential in providing

sensory details within my essay and help create my overall

point of the novel.

Sapphire, (1996). PUSH. New York City, NY : Alfred A. Knopf

16 year

attend alternative school to continue her education. While

attending the school she still deals with her mothers constant

disrespect and abuse. Precious later loses her home with her

becomes curious with the thought of being in a relationship with

her sexual experiences and abuse she faces difficulties. Precious

later joins a HIV and Incenst support group. The novel ends with

not future or insight into Precious life. With the novel itself being

my main source for my essay I will use the entire text to provide

details and supports claims and my thesis along with all other

sources that I have cited.

expresses her thoughts as she reads the novel and how it

isnt your typical read. Woods states figuratively that this

would be taken in your fathers oldsmobile. Woods states

that this novel being thought provoking will spark a debate

with the novels merit and the authors talent. Scenes

within the novel support her opinion as well as direct

quotes from the book such as I was left back when I

was 12 because I had a baby for my fahva example such

as this confuses readers which will lead them to question

the book as a whole. Paula L. Woods the author of the

Article has edited and written many books on black history

and literature. With her being an African African American

Crime Novelist she is easily able to assess and analyze the

text and provide suitable judgement. This article will be

useful in providing an insight on the target audience in
