Topic: Rescuing animals from shelters vs. buying from a breeder

Thesis Statement: Why should you rescue an animal from a shelter rather than buying from a

breeder or a pet store.

Barley, Lisa. "Rescue Me." Vegetarian Times, no. 417, Dec. 2014, pp. 48-51. EBSCOhost,

can ultimately save you money and how shelters know more about their dogs than breeders.

Bowman also talks about the amount of dogs that are in shelters and what percent actually get

adopted. This article was perfect for my service hours research paper because the author gives

great reasons as to why people should get their pets from shelters versus a breeder or a pet store.

Solotaroff, Paul. "The Dog Factory." Rolling Stone, no. 1278/1279, 12 Jan. 2017, p. 42.

In Paul Solotaroffs The Dog Factory he gives a chilling first hand account of a puppy

mill in Cabarrus County, North Carolina. He describes the gruelling process of organizing a

puppy mill raid. He also describes how easy it is to accidentally purchase a puppy from a mill

and how common it is. Solotaroff then goes on to talk about the auction him and other

investigators went to which involved the sale of puppy mill dogs and how one man from a Texas

rescue, who spent 60,000 dollars to save twenty dogs. Solotaroff went into more detail

describing the Texas man and his efforts to help save dogs from mills. I choose this article

because of its detailed description of the puppy mills and the efforts of people trying to stop

them.

Sorentrue, Jennifer and Pat Beall. "Brutal Beginnings." IRE Journal, vol. 36, no. 2, Spring 2013,

how thousands of dogs were being bred at puppy mills and sold to pet stores around the county.

The article also gives a detailed description on how to track puppy mill sellers in your own area.

I decided to use this article because it goes along with why people should not adopt from pet

stores and it explains how to tell if a dog in a pet store is from a puppy mill.
