Safe Drinking Water Issue in Bihar

Water is most important and most fundamental requirement of every living being on
the earth. The requirement of drinking water, as well as irrigation water, is a big
issue in the village of Bihar. The main issue is the adequate amount of drinking
water supply as all the villages fully depend on the Government drinking water
supply scheme and this is not able to cover all the households of the the villages.
Drinking water is a serious issue, as government supply of drinking water comes a
single time in a day, which is not sufficient for their day-to-day requirement. Low
availability of irrigation water affects the agriculture production and dependency of
ground water for irrigation make agriculture more expensive.
Besides the problem of poor availability of the water supply, the presence of
salinity, fluoride, nitrite and iron has affected the quality of water and creates the
major health problems in the villages. These contaminations have occurred due to
high usage of pesticide and fertilizer in their agricultural land as well as bathing and
washing of cloths and open defecation near the rivers and natural water sources.
The current government policy does not seem to address the water scarcity and
health issues created by the use of contaminated water. Awareness regarding water
resource management and adverse health impacts of using poor quality of water is
missing among the villagers.

Objectives
1. To identify the natural resources and their distribution across village
2. To finding the reason for unavailability of water for agriculture as well
as for drinking purpose

Methodology
The method used for collecting the qualitative data are interaction with the
villagers, structured interview, informal meeting and using various PRA tools.

Strata design
The study has adopted a stratified random sampling procedure with the rural
household as an ultimate unit of acquiring required information of our study. We will
select the 20% sample size of every community of village.
