Photo Remake Original Portrait

Otto Dix-Portrait of Journalist Sylvia von Harden

Artistic Statement Madi Mast

I found this project to be the most interesting out of all the others, because you arent just re-
making the portrait. Youre learning and researching about what it means, and what statement
the artist is trying to make with it. Otto Dix, from what Ive learned, was trying to paint the new
woman. The new woman, smokes and drinks. She does not have to be responsible for any
family/children or husband. This new woman made me think that Otto Dix was painting a
woman that wasnt traditional. She isnt the woman, that stays at home, & takes care of the
children while the husband works. The new woman is only career oriented, though. I found this
painting interesting, because I had never seen it before, but I saw it while looking through
famous portraits. I chose it, because I wanted to research it, and find out what it means and
what the artist was trying to state. In my remake I used the resources I had, and even though
everything was a different color, it was still the same idea. The chair Sylvia is sitting in is more
organic looking than her outfit. I did not have a chair like that, but I used a small table instead.
And Im wearing a very similar outfit, that is a different color, but it still has a plaid pattern. Im
also wearing the tights(or stockings). My remake wasnt necessarily a modern remake, but it
wasnt an exact match to the original. Its just meant to be similar, and familiar.
