Professor Research

Because my major is Sports Management, the professor I am going to research in

my department is Dr. Wiggins. He is the professor of Sports History in the School of
Recreation, Health, and Tourism. He earned his Ph.D. from the University of
Maryland. He is also a Co-director for the Center for the Study of Sports and Leisure
in Society at George Mason University. Dr. Wiggins also teaches in the Center for
Sports Management, Sport and Recreation Studies.
Dr. Wiggins is a member of some professional organizations. For example, he is the
editor of the Journal of Sports History, History and Philosophy Section Editor of the
Research Quarterly for Exercise and Sport, and Editor of Quest (College of Education
and Human Development, n.d.).
The other ways that Dr. Wiggins participated in academic communities are
involvement in many consultantships and media initiatives; Dr. Wiggins gave many
invited lectureships; and made numerous scholarly presentations at state, regional, and
national conferences (College of Education and Human Development, n.d.).
Dr. Wiggins has published scholarly articles, book chapters, and more than ten
books on the history of sport, particularly as it relates to the involvement of African
American participation in sport and physical activity.
Dr. Wiggins researches the History of African American participation in sport,
sports biography, race and ethnic issues in contemporary sport. Most of the books Dr.
Wigginss publish are related to this topic. Dr. Wiggins has published a number of
academic articles, and several books in the sports history topic. There are The
Routledge History of American Sport, Routledge Handbook of Sport, Race and
Ethnicity, Separate Games, Philly Sports, Black Athletes in a White America (1997);
Sport and the Color Line: Black Athletes and Race Relations in Twentieth-Century
America , The Unlevel Playing Field: A Documentary History of the African
American Experience in Sport , Out of the Shadows: A Biographical History of
African American Athletes (2006).
There are two books that I am interested in. For example, the book Black Athletes

in a White America published in 1997 is the first time that essays discuss the African
Americans issue. Another book is Out of the Shadows: A Biographical History of
African American Athletes published in 2006. This book collected data on the lives
and sports of African-American athletes from the nineteenth century to today. In this
book, there are twenty biographies that mention how the transformation of sports,
American society, and civil rights legislation are changing.
The history of African American participation in sports is interesting to me. We can
see numerous outstanding African American althetes in the field nowadays. However,
we did not know that before 50 years ago, how many challenges they had faced. The
books are the best way we can understand the history. In short, my major is sports
management, I should know more about how the American sports industry has
evolved. Moreover, its an issue that we cannot ignore (College of Education and
Human Development, n.d.).
