TIM INSTRUCTIONAL SEQUENCE FORMATIVE ASSESSMENT

E

Note: A variety of formative

assessments should be used at key
points throughout the lesson.

5 min Get started/Drill/Do Now: (What meaningful activity will students complete
as soon as they enter the classroom?)

Show kids pictures of the real Pocahontas and John Smith and
the Disney version of Pocahontas and John Smith. Ask who
are these characters?
10 Engage/Motivation: (How will student interest be sparked? Is there prior N/A
min knowledge that should be tapped? Is there vocabulary that must be cleared?
Is there brainstorming that student need to complete before the lesson
begins?)

Weve been talking about American exploration. There is truth

to how these 2 characters were part of history. Here are 2 books
about these characters-one is informational text and the other is
literature.
John Smith was an explorer to America who helped to found
Jamestown and make friends with the Native Americans.
Pocahontas was an Indian Princess who befriended the
explorers and brought peace to the Indians.

15 Whole Group Instruction: (Focus lessons [explicit teaching/modeling, N/A

min strategy demonstration, activate prior knowledge], shared reading, shared
writing, discussion, writing process.)

Teacher: Im going to compare the story of John Smith in

these books to demonstrate how to summarize his story.
Show the Disney version and read the parts about John Smith
quickly - go through the text features and summarize using the
text features. (Adjust time spent on this summary according to
how familiar students are with this version.)
Read the pages of The Story of Pocahontas about John Smith.
Pp. 7-16 and p 30 fill out the organizer looking for repeated
words, first/last sentences and checking to see if the illustrations
verify your summary.

5 min Group Practice/Small Group Instruction: (teacher-facilitated group N/A

discussion, student or teacher-led collaboration, student conferencing, re-
teaching or intervention, writing process)
Discussion: Why are there two versions of this story?
Why do you think the Disney author wrote the story like that?
Why did the informational text author write her story like she
did?

10 Independent Practice: (individual practice, discussion, writing process.) N/A

Students Individual Practice: Students will summarize
literature text
Students will summarize informational text and the teacher will
check the students work as the teacher walks around

Its the students turn to summarize two stories about

Pocahontas, as a group read the disney version and keep your
main focus on the pages that have to do with Pocahontas and
then pass out the summarizing literature worksheet have the
kids fill it out.

Next the teacher passes out the summarizing informational text

worksheets and reminds the students to focus on the
illustrations in the book but also look/listen to repeating words.
The teacher re-reads the first/last sentences and then lets the
students to fill out the worksheet. The students will be able to
use the book to look for those repeat words. Last thing walk
around and check the students work to make sure they are
understanding what they are learning.

10 Evaluate Understanding/Assessment: (How will I know if students have

were learning.
Heres some question you could ask:
What did we learn from the two stories we read today in class?
What did you learn as a student?
What is informational text vs literature text?
Did we hit all of our objectives in the standards?
5 min Closing Activities/Summary: (How will I tie up loose ends, reinforce/revisit N/A
the objective and connect the lesson to the unit?)
Having a follow up discussion with the students:
There are some question you can ask the students.
Now that we have 2 summaries, it's easy to compare them. Who
wants to share their summary?
Which version did you like better? Why?
When would you use the informational text? When would you use the
literature version?

Enrichment/Extension/Re-teaching/Accommodations: (How will my N/A

lesson satisfy the needs of all learners?)

As a teacher if you know if satisfy your students by they

understood the lesson that was being taught, hit all the objective
standards, the students can answer the question from the
evaluation part and the students can reflect on the lesson they
learned about.

Instructional Materials Needed: (What do I need in order to teach the lesson?)

Post-Lesson Reflection:
Before I even began the lesson, I prepared the classroom. I made sure I had all of the
materials I needed. I also made sure to put away any distractions, such as extra pencils, erasers,
or math blocks, because this group of students sometimes struggles to stay on task. When the
students came in, I asked them if they recognized the Pocahontas and John Smith from the
Disney version of the story. They all recognized quickly who it was. All of them had seen the
movie.
Next, I introduced the students to the informational text about Pocahontas and John
Smith. I then modeled how to compare and contrast the two stories. The students seemed to
understand what I was doing when I would ask them what is similar between the two stories?
and what is different between the two stories? However, when I used the words compare and
contrast they seemed confused. I think they understand the concept of comparing and
contrasting, but the unfamiliar words make them nervous.
During the class discussion, all of the students actively participated. They seemed eager to give
their opinion on the stories. When I asked the class, Why there are two versions of the story?
they had a little trouble forming their answers. However, after I had them refer back to the
differences between the two stories, they were able to explain why. Overall, the students
understood the standard and were able to compare and contrast the two stories. Although, I think
we might need to spend another day on this lesson.
