N = Speed of the journal, (rpm)

p = bearing peressure on nthe projected bearing area, (kg/cm2)

journal, (cm)

Coefficient of friction for joural bearing

Wherek = factor to correct for end leakage

In design it is assumed that the pressure is uniformly distributed throughout the
bearing surface.

Let W = Load transmitted over the bearing surface

R = radius of the bearing surface (or shaft)

A = Cross-sectional area of the bearing surface

P = Bearing pressure per unit area of the bearing surface between

rubbing surface, and

= coefficient of friction

N = Speed of the shaft in r.p.m

When the pressure is uniformly distribute over the bearing area then

(T being in kg-m)

Notes

1. When the counter boring of the shaft is considered, then the bearing
preasure

Where r = radius of counter bore and the frictional torque,

2. The allowable bearing preasure (p) for the foot step bearing may be taken as
follow:
a. For rubbing speed from 15 to 60 m/min, the bearing preasure should be
sucg that
p.v < 420

b. for rubbing speeds over 60 m/min, the pressure should not exceed 7
kg/

c. For intermittent service, the bearing preasure may be taken as 105 kg/

d. For very slow speeds, the bearing preasure may be taken as high as
140 kg/

3. The coefficient of friction for the foot step bearings may be taken as 0-015.

Example

Foot step bearing supports a shaft of 15 cm diameter, running at 100 rpm. The shaft
is bored with a shallow hole of 5 cm at the end. If the bearing pressure is limited to
8 kg/ find

a. Load to be supported
b. Horsepower lost in friction

Solution

Given. Diameter of the shaft

D = 15 cm

Radius of shaft

R=7.5 cm

Speed of shaft

N = 100 rpm
Diameter of hole

R=2.5 cm

Bearing pressure

P= 8 kg/

a. Load to be supported

Let W = Load to be supported

Assuming that the pressure is uniformly distributed over the bearing surface
therefore

b. Horsepower lost in friction

Let P = Horsepower lost in friction
T = Total frictional torque
Using relation

r = Inner radius of the collar
A = cross-sectional area of the bearing surface
=n
P = bearing pressure per unit are of the bearing surfaces
= Coeficient friction
N = Speed of the shaft in rpm
When the preasure is uniformly distributed over the bearing surface, then

And the total frictional torque

Notes
1. The coefficient of friction for the collar bearings may be taken as 0.03 to 0.05
2. The bearing pressure for asingle collar and water cooled multi collared bearing
mey be taken same as foot step bearings

Examples

The thust of of a propeller shaft in a marine engine is taken up by a number of collar

integral with the shaft wich is 30 cm in diameter. The thrust on the shaft is 20.000
kg and the speed is 75 rpm. Taking constant an aqual 0.05 and assuming the
bearing preasure as uniform and equal to 3 kg/ , find

a. Number of collar required

b. Horsepower lost in friction
c. Heat generated at the bearing in kcal/min

Solution

Given diameter of the shaft , i.e. , inner diameter of the collar, d=30

Inner radius of the collar r= 15 cm

Thrust on the shaft W = 20.000 kg

Speed of shaft N= 75 rpm

Coeficient of friction = 0.05

Bearing preasure p = 3 kg/

Since the outher diameter of the collar (d) is taken as 1.4 to 1.8 times diameter of
shaft (d), therefore let us take

D=1.4d = 1.4

Outer radius of the collar

R = 21 cm

a. Number of collars required

Let n = number pf collers required
Using the relation

= 9.82 or 10 Ans

b. Horsepower lost in friction

Let P= horsepower lost in friction
T = Total frictional torque
Using the relation

= 18,150 kg-cm= 181.50 kg-m

Again using the relation

c. Heat generated at the bearing

We know that the work lost in friction

=Horsepower

=19

Heat generated at bearing

Example

The thrust of propeller shaft is absorbed by 6 collars. The rubbing surfaces of these
collars have outer diameter 300mm and inner diameter 200mm. if the shaft runs at
120 rpm, the bearing pressure amount to 0 N/ . The coefficient of friction may

be taken 0 . Assuming that the pressure is uniformly distribute, determine the

horsepower absorbed by the collars.

Solution

Given. Number of collars n=6

Outer diameter of collars, D = 300 mm

Outer radius of collars, R = 150 mm

Inner diameters of collars, d = 200 mm

Inner radius of collars, r = 100 mm

Speed of the shaft, N = 120 rpm

Bearing preasure, p = 0

Coefficient of friction,

Let W= thrust on the shaft

Since the pressure is uniformly distributed over the bearing surface, therefore

=94.260 N

Horse power absorbed by the collars

Let P = horse power absorbed by the collars

T = Total frictional torque

Using the relation

= 597.000 N-mm = 597 N-m

Again using the relation

=T =

= 7504 W = 7.504 kW Ans
