Part A Collect and represent data

Data collection Primary research

1. What is the inquiry topic?

What strategy can be used to improve liveability in a local area

2. Define in your own words what the task is asking you to do.

The tasks is asking us to judge how suitable or comfortable a place is to live in based on some critereas
and see what can be improve. We will see if our locotion offers the facilities that people find necessary
and keep a record. We will asks the local areas citizens for their opinion about the place and with that
information, we will decides what needs to be improve and make better in the areaand how what we can
make the area more liveable.

3. Develop at least three subquestions to frame your inquiry. These will be the questions that
help you answer the inquiry topic question. These questions should cover:
factors that influence decisions people make about where to live
factors that affect liveability in a local area
strategies to improve the liveability of places.

An example has been provided below.

What services and facilities are available to people in my local area?

Is the area safe? (low crime rates)

Is there any form of pollution?( water, noise, air)

Is it noisy from traffic, construction..etc.?

4. Establish the location of the study.

The location being studied is: Small part of Ong ich Khiem Street

Description of the location of the study:

Theres a lot of traffic and construction noises around Ong Ich KHiem Street and there are many of mini
shop along the street. The street is near the center of the city so there are many of supermarket and big
buildings.

notebooks.

Observation of what should be improved to increase liveability in the area

INSTRUCTIONS: Identify ways that the liveability of the area could be improved. How could access to
services and facilities be improved? How could environmental quality be improved? An example is
provided below.
(E.g. The roads are in poor condition there are some potholes and there is a busy intersection that
needs lights.)
the roads are too small and narrow for the amount of vehicles that psses here daily. there are lots of
rubbishes from plastic bags to cans of sodas. The place is also very loud due to big constructions and
traffic and theres also sign of air pollution from the dusts the vehickes produes. To improve the
liveability of this place, we need to make bigger roads, clean up the rubbish, plant more trees, and
make more open space such as as parks.

7. Collect and record primary data using a questionnaire of people who live in the local area. You
need to find out peoples perceptions of liveability in the area. Your questions should cover:
reasons people have decided to live in the area
whether they think services and facilities are available in the area
what they think of environmental quality in the area
what they think of social connectedness, community identity and crime and safety.

Record of peoples perception of liveability in the local area
INSTRUCTIONS: Use the bullet points above to develop five questions to find out peoples
perceptions of liveability in the local area. These questions should have yes/no or multiple-choice
answers. Write the questions and the possible responses in the table below and make a copy for
each person whom you question. Question at least five people who live in the local area. Ideally, you
should question a variety of ages and genders. Ensure all questionnaire responses are attached to
the booklet.

improved. An example has been provided for you.
(e.g. There is a lack of healthcare centres in the area which would mean that people have to travel
further to see a doctor.)

2. Develop a question about each of the following factors affecting liveability to focus your
secondary research.
Water pollution in the area.
Air pollution in the area.
Crime statistics in the area.
Traffic conditions in the area.
Noise complaints in the area.

One example has been provided for you.

(e.g. What are the effects of water pollution on the area?)
What cause the air pollution in this area?
Do the crime rates improve a lot in this area?
What are the problem of traffic conditions here?
How do the noisy sounds from traffic and construction effects this area?

Part B Analyse and interpret data
1. Use the data and information from the primary sources collected in Part A to answer the
questions below.

Observation location
Would the day, time of day and weather have affected the number of people in the observation area?
Why/why not?
Yes, because there is a specific time that truck and bus to go through due to the small and narrow street.

How could more accurate data have been gathered?

To make the data more accurate, find the ward of the street that was studied where keeps all of the
information of the street.
Observation of people
What group/s had the highest observed numbers? Why do you think this is the case?
The teenager group had the highest observed numbers because in this street mouse of the houses are
for living so in the time that we do the observation, we saw many of teenagers.

Observation of availability of services and facilities

Which services/facilities are the most common in the area?
The most common services/facilities in this area are restaurant and shop
Is there a relationship between the types of services/facilities in the area and the types of people who are
using the area? Explain your answer.

Observation of environmental quality

What are the main factors affecting environmental quality in the area?
-Then main factor affecting environmental quality in this area are vehicles because it cases air and
sound pollution. Some people throws rubbish on the sidewalk and roads and that also affects the
environment

Observation of what should be improved to increase liveability in the area

What would you consider as being the most important factor that needs to be improved to increase
liveability in the area. Briefly explain your choice.
I think environmental quality need to be improve a lot because this factor is affecting air pollution and
sound quality.
Peoples perception of liveability in the local area
What was the main factor that influenced peoples decisions to live in the area?
The factor that influenced peoples decisions to live in then area is social factor because Ong Ich KHiem
contains bank, place to worship, restaurant,.. that could support for peoples life.

16 of 23
Geo_Y07_U2_AT_StudentBooklet
What did the people who completed the questionnaire think of the availability of services and facilities in
the area?
Most of the people are living in this area said that theres enough facilities because this street is near the
center of the city but they would want to see a park or safe open space so their kids can go and hang
out.

What did the people who completed the questionnaire think of the environmental quality in the area?
Most of the people who completed the questionnaire said that the environmental quality here is not so
good because of the smoke and dust cause air pollution and sound problem from night restaurant,
construction and traffic. They want people around it participate and clean this area and make it more
clean.

What did the people who completed the questionnaire think of social connectedness, community identity
and crime and safety?
They said this area contain most of the services and facilities that are supporting their living because
there are temple, bank, restaurants and pharmacy but the crime and safety are not so great at this area
because they havent seen any of strict rules or not much polices gone through this street.

2. Use the data and information from the secondary sources collected in Part A to answer the
questions below.
What services/facilities were most in need of improvement to increase liveability in the local area?
Explain your choice.

Which of the following do you think had the greatest impact on liveability in the area:
water pollution
air pollution
crime
traffic
noise.

Briefly explain your choice.

I think air pollution, traffic and noise had the greatest impact on liveability. Theres a lot of cars and
motorbikes. Theres also karaoke and noises from the construction.

Part C Propose and evaluate strategies

1. Identify one factor affecting liveability that needs to be improved

Based on the findings in Part B, choose ONE of the following factors affecting liveability that you
think most needs to be improved in the area. Tick your choice.
The availability of services and facilities needs to be improved.
Environmental quality needs to be improved.
Social connectedness, community identity and perceptions of crime and safety need to be
improved.

2. Propose two strategies

Suggest two strategies to improve your chosen factor affecting liveability in the local area. Describe
each strategy.

Strategy A:
Create the community that is people get together and help to clean the street or plant more trees.
Strategy B:
People will need to pay money if they dont have environmental consciousness.

Geo_Y07_U2_AT_StudentBooklet
3. Evaluate the strategies using a decision making matrix
Evaluate the two strategies in terms of environmental, social and economic factors using the following
decision making matrix. Write the strategy at the top of the column and answer the questions in the left
hand column for each strategy by giving the positives and negatives for each strategy.

Note: Multiple spaces have been given to list positive and negatives; however, you need not use them
all (e.g. there may be more positives than negatives for one factor compared to another).

Part D Make and justify decisions
1. Make a decision about the best strategy
Through consideration of all the factors evaluated in the decision-making matrix, make a decision
about which of the two strategies for action most improves the liveability of the local area. Briefly
explain your choice.
Create a community to help to imrove all fo the factor is the strategies that is most improves the
liveability of the local area because it help people to get jobs, there will be workers cleaning the street
and plant more trees for the environment, it also make people healthier because the air pollution will
be less.

2. Justify your decision

Briefly justify your decision about the best strategy to improve liveability in the local area. You must
explain how the chosen strategy will improve liveability and explain why it is better than the other
strategy. You must also refer to the data you gathered in Part A to support your response.
We think this strategy is the better than the other strategy because it easy to invite people to participate
in the community than make people to have their respect to the environment and other services that
could improve the liveability. The community could help to clean the environment and support other
services and facilities. Most of the problem about liveability at Part A is environmental quality and
need people in that area said that they need someone to clean and make the street more beautiful so
in a community each people will do a different job to help the liveability improve.
