LESSON PLAN
TEACHER:
DATE:
CLASS: FORM 1
TEACHING POINT: Subject verb agreement refers to the fact that the subject and verb in a
sentence must agree in number. In other words, they both must be singular or they both must be
plural. You cant have a singular subject with a plural verb or vice versa.
PRE ENTRY PERFORMANCE: Students would have learnt about singular subjects and
singular verbs and how to make them agree in primary school.
MATERIALS: Projector/Screen, PowerPoint slides, Video Clips, Handouts, and White Board
Markers.
PROCEDURE:
SET INDUCTION: Teacher writes a sentence on the board; the subject-verb is non-existent;
and ask students what is wrong with the sentence. (Ask probing Questions).
STEP 1: Teacher explains to students that the subject determines the form of the verb.
STEP 2: Next the teacher list the rules regarding subject-verb agreement on the board.
Singular verbs often end with (s), but plural verbs usually do not.
STEP 3: The teacher then distributes a worksheet with the lyrics for the song Somebody that I
Used to Know to discuss in small groups.
The teacher plays the song for the class to hear the music as it sounds.
In groups the students are asked to identify the subject-verb agreement and
its corrections.
STEP 4: Students are given a list of sentences to fill in the appropriate verbs.
STUDENTS ACTIVITIES:
CLOSURE: Ask students a few questions such as; what verb would you use with the subject
hats? And what subject would go with the verb swings?
Ask students how they know when a verb agrees with a subject and what they have to think
about when picking verbs to match subjects.
CONTINGENCY PLAN: If technology fails, teacher uses handouts and the whiteboard to
illustrate notes. Teacher plays the song on phone so the students can hear it.
Relevant notes can be given on the whiteboard if handouts are not available.
