TOPIC : Total quality management practices and performance of large manufacturing firms in
Uganda.

INTRODUCTION
This section will comprise of the background of the study, research questions, scope of the Study,
that is to say, subject scope, geographical scope, time scope, and the significance of the Study.

BACKGROUND
Total quality management practices and performance of Uganda Breweries Over the years, the
performance of Uganda Breweries is declining. This is likely to have been Caused by high
labour turnover, total quality management practices, limited skilled labour, Inadequate resources
for example raw materials, among others.

The major cause of declining performance is total quality management practices. This is defined
as a method by which management and employees can become involved in the continuous
improvement of the production of goods and services. It is also a combination of quality and
management tools aimed at increasing business and reducing losses due to wasteful practices.

However Semantic scholar suggested that ,total quality management has been based on the quest
for progress and continual improvement in the areas of quality via action plans in different
operation of the business cycle.

Wagner group differed that total quality management is focused on customer satisfaction and that
therefore sports managers may find its concepts useful for sports organization.
In Uganda breweries, total quality management is comprised; Top management commitment and
involvement, customer involvement, designing products for quality and developing supplier
relationships.
Performance looks at how work is accomplished in an organization using the available
resources and the time available. However, this can be explained by performance management as
a continuous process where managers and employees work together to plan, monitor and review
an employees work objectives and his or her overall contribution to the organization.

PERFORMANCE IN UGANDA BREWERIES

Uganda breweries were not so long ago, the leading brewer of alcoholic beverages in Uganda.
The growth has since changed following more robust competitive strategies adopted by its major
competitors. The organization has since experienced steady decrease in their market share.

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM
Performance of manufacturing firms in Uganda , Most large manufacturing firms in Uganda are
characterized by low sales, low profits, high labour turnover, increasing costs and many others.
This is likely to be caused by lack of enough supervision, total quality management practices and
poor management of such firms.
The managers have tried to adopt bench marking, training of employees, quality assurance
policies and others with an aim of solving the problem. However, the problem has persisted.
Therefore, large manufacturing firms need to urgently handle the problem of declining
performance or else it may result into loss of organizations reputation and customers if not
urgently handled.
