Residents skeptical over new hillside development

R
esidents got their first look at a
new housing development that
would change the face of the
Webb Canyon hillside.
The Clara Oaks project was unveiled to a packed
crowd in the Padua Room at the Alexander Hughes
Center Monday evening, as representatives talked
about the plans and fielded questions from the skepti-
cal crowd.
Clara Oaks is a proposed 47 single-family home
development with an emphasis on making as little of
an impact on the hillsides as possible, according to
Steve Austin, a civil engineer working for Clara Oaks.
Director of Community Development Brian Desat-
nik explained that the development is still in its early
stages. The specific plan and environmental impact
report still have to be created, and the plans will then
have to be reviewed by the citys commissions and
the city council.
In all, it could take up to two years for the plans to
make it to the review process.
This is really the first step in the process, Mr. De-
satnik said. The plans have not been formally sub-
mitted to the city.
Mr. Desatnik gave a quick overview of the history
of hillside regulation and the mechanism that governs COURIERphoto/Peter Weinberger

subject of an apparent showdown
between the city and a developer.
The parcel, formerly the home of the since-demol-

based Denley Investment & Management since 2011. It
was initially set to be the home of The Village Lofts, a
mixed-use residential and commercial development
that was once touted as the final piece of the puzzle in
the Village West expansion.
But now, the plans appear to be in danger. After years
of delays, the Community Development Department
has voided the projects approval by the Architectural
Commission. Denley has issued an appeal, and the
planning commission is set hear the case, according to
Director of Community Development Brian Desatnik,
with a tentative date of May 16.
In a January 30 letter sent to Denley President Mehdi
Bolour, Mr. Desatnik presented a timeline of delays for
a project that has seen an extreme lack of continuity
and oversight.

David Oxtoby reflects on his 14 years at Pomona College

A
t his inauguration 14 years ago,
Pomona College President David
Oxtoby borrowed from W.E.B.
DuBois.
The function of the universityand, I would add, the
liberal arts collegeis not simply to teach bread-winning,
or to furnish teachers for the public schools, or to be a cen-
tre of polite society; it is above all to be the organ of that
fine adjustment between real life and the growing knowl-
edge of life, an adjustment which forms the secret of civ-
ilization.
The sentiment from Mr. DuBois, an author, civil
rights activist and the first African American to earn a doc-
torate, resonated with Mr. Oxtoby.
Its such a broad quote, from an advocacy point of
view, he said. And it was way ahead of its time. It re-
minds me of language Obama uses.
And so began Mr. Oxtobys tenure as Pomona Colleges
ninth president. As the former dean of physical sciences
at the University of Chicago, he joined Pomona College
in 2003 with an established reputation for environmen-
tal chemistry, a subject he notes is at the heart of his in-
terest and research experience.

College journalists navigate political climate, freedom of speech
A
fierce battle is being waged at the
Claremont Colleges over the First
Amendment, and a student publi-
cation is caught in the crossfire.
In the past couple years, students attending the citys
five undergraduate colleges have become increasingly
politically active, with their demonstrations, statements
and demands typically centering on issues of race.
While many students have expressed chagrin at what
they say is a toxic atmosphere at the 5Csmore con-
ducive to whiteness than diversitytheir doings have
been reported faithfully in the two most well known
student-run publications covering the Colleges.
Both The Student Life and The Claremont Independ-
ent are staffed by students dedicated to journalism and
to amplifying the messages coming from campus ac-
tivists.
The Student Life prides itself on having no ideologi-
cal bent. Its reportage is largely neutral, though in edi-
torials and opinions there tends to be a sympathetic tone
toward student activists.
The Claremont Independent also demonstrates some
solid reportage of student activism, but the publication
makes no bones about having a viewpoint. When it
comes to its staffers politics, The Claremont Indepen-
