I
nternational migration is a global phenomenon with a growing influence
from the local to the international level owing, among other factors, to the
integration of economies, the development of the media, economic growth,
labor market needs and military and political conflicts.
The objective of this chapter is to present a general overview of
international migration, which serves as a reference for identifying the key
figures, statistics and trends related to this phenomenon across regions and/or
countries, migratory corridors and the basic sociodemographic characteristics
of international migrants.

O
ne of the indicators of the quality of life and social inclusion of Mexican
in the U.S. is access to medical insurance and their health conditions.
Despite the fact that in the last few years progress has been made in
the level of regular medical care, four out of every ten Mexicans still do not
receive it. Even more important are the past and future consequences caused
by late detection of illness such as delay in the required care.
The goal of this chapter is to show the variables associated with this topic by
presenting the levels and characteristics of medical insurance among Mexican
immigrants in the U.S. as well as a number of health conditions among those
who settle there. To this end, five variables will be addressed: self-perception
of ones health, Body Mass Index, previous diagnosis of diabetes, functional
disability and feelings of despair.

UU. (DHS) y la Encuesta
sobre Migracin en la Frontera Norte de Mxico (EMIF NORTE).
I
n the past five years (2010-2015), it is estimated that the U.S. immigration
authorities registered more than three million repatriations of people to their
countries of origin, amounting to the total population of Uruguay. Of this
total, Mexicans account for nearly two million of the repatriations, equivalent
to the total population of Slovenia.
Given the number of these repatriations, this chapter will review the main
sociodemographic and border-crossing characteristics of the repatriated
Mexican population, by drawing on the primary administrative sources of
both Mexico (INM-National Migration Institute) and the United States (DHS
-Department of Homeland Security) as well as the Survey of Migration at
Mexicos Northern Border (EMIF NORTE).

D
migrantes hacia EE. UU.; sin embargo, recientemente la migracin de
retorno ha captado mayor inters de investigadores, gobierno y sociedad civil;
F
or decades, Mexico has been characterized by having a long tradition of
migration: it has been the origin country of a large number of migrants
entering the U.S. However, in recent years, return migration has attracted
growing interest among researchers, government and civil society because
of the social and economic implications for the communities of origin. Owing
to the characteristics of Mexican migration to the U.S., return migration is
considered to be multicausal, primarily associated with voluntary decisions of
a personal, familial, community and even economic nature but also associated
with involuntary situations, as in the case when return is due to deportation.
Return migration assumes greater significance when we consider the
different employment, education and health problems that arise following
migrants reinsertion into their communities of origin. This chapter pre-
sents statistical information concerning the sociodemographic and labor
characteristics of return migrants, helping to identify the context in which this
phenomenon takes place.

M
igration is a highly complex phenomenon involving not only the
displacement of adults from their countries of origin to other
countries, but also the movement of family units and children. This
latter group assumes greater relevance owingto the fact that, in general, the
decision to migrate does not depend on the children themselves due to their
status as minors, but rather on the family. Poverty in the countries of origin
is undoubtedly one of the most important causes of migration among children.
However, other factors linked to family reunification, migratory tradition
or violence may also be relevant. In addition, factors such as the dangers
faced in transit and while crossing borders have increased, highlighting the
vulnerability of migrant children.
This chapter will present statistical information based on data from
Mexican and United States administrative records concerning the population
under 18 years, including children and adolescents from Mexico and Central
America. This latter group is identified as being comprised of children who have
traveled from Guatemala, El Salvador and Honduras.

N
owadays, migrants entering Mexican territories in order to reach the
United States or those who are living in that country without the
required documentation find themselves in a context where migratory
controls havebecome morerestrictive. As a result, there has been an increase
in the number of Central Americans who are arrested and repatriated to
their country of origin.
This chapter will present recent statistical information on the flow of Central
Americans from Guatemala, Honduras and El Salvador, who were repatriated
by the Mexican and United Stated immigration authorities. To this end, the
first part will show a number of data trends found in the administrative records
of both countries. The second part will address trends and sociodemographic
characteristics of border crossing and arrests, using information on the flow
of repatriates recorded in the Survey of Migration at Mexicos Southern Border

E
T
he migratory phenomenon is closely linked to remittances, in other
words, the money international migrants send their families and/or
communities in their country of origin. This has numerous economic
and social implications: the decisions made by the receiving families
regarding consumption and investment create specific relationships within
and among regions.
This chapter will present an overview of remittances at the global,
regional, and national level, including their origin, destination and sending
costs. It will focus on Mexico and include some of the characteristics of
recipient households.

The Yearbook of Migration and Remittances Mexico 2016 is the result of the joint work of the National
Population Council (CONAPO), BBVA Bancomer Foundation and BBVA Research. It presents statistical
information from the main official sources, both national and international, on migration dynamics
in Mexico and the world. This edition includes data disaggregated by sex in order to identify the
differences between women and men as regards the sociodemographic and work profile of migrants
from Mexico and other countries, as well as migrant children, returnees, and Central Americans in
transit. It is designed for the general public, specialists and anyone interested in issues related to
migration and remittances.
