The primary cultural backgrounds of Santa Fe are Anglo, Hispanic, and Native Indian. Pueblo Indians
inhabited the area continuously for 1000 years until 1607 when the Spanish ruled New Mexico.
The Spanish brought Catholicism with then and it is the primary religion still practiced in the area today.
Mexico had gained control of Santa Fe prior to the United States. It is still a rich blend of cultures with
nearly a million and a half tourists a year.

Dorothy Day House also known as the home for the homeless is one of the
only shelters that take in homeless families and keep them together. This house and
its members have been abetting to keep families together, creating a safe and
community oriented place for them. In most shelters, families are often separated.
The Dorothy Day House can house several families at once, with daily household
tasks having them work together, cleaning, cooking meals, and maintaining the
house it truly provides a homely atmosphere. People who share the same sort of
hardships create bonds, mutually supporting one another in order to overcome the
shared struggle of poverty.
Most of the families that find themselves at the Dorothy Day House have been
through some sort of trauma, unemployment and/or generational poverty. No
matter what their situation may be the members will work with them to give them
stable housing and securing their employment. Some of the services provided are
food, clothing and toiletries that are stored in the house. Members will also provide
educational resources for both children and adults in financing and employment,
parenting skills, and counseling. Not to mention the prospective job contacts and
transportation they provide as well.
The house is marks it 11th year of service in May 2017. Knowing that there
are people in the city who face the challenges of poverty everyday there are also
thousands of people who want to help and support these homeless families. The
organization started with a single house for a long time only being able to house 3
families at a time. With the need for more room, starting this year they will be
expanding to four houses which will have the means of accommodate 12 families.
The fact that they are using houses and not packing people one large room or a
commercial that can feel like homely.

REFLECTION
I absolutely loved my Residential Design I course, that I couldnt wait to see

what kind of project we would be doing for our Residential Design II. Throughout
this course we touched all of the same concepts and requirements when doing
these large-scale projects. I can definitely say that Im strengthening a lot of skills
Ive learned from past courses but have also learned some new things as well.
One of the main concepts that Im still trying to strengthen is planning

ahead. Time frames on projects are a very important aspect and should be met
consistently. There are many factors in a project that contribute to a completed
design and it doesnt always run as smoothly as we want it to. There lays our
problem solving skills, which I can also coincide with because I love a challenge.
If youre not challenging yourself you cannot grow as a designer.
I also am establishing my clarity skills. Meaning Ive gone through the

project parameters and understand what needs to be provided for the client to
understand what youve created for this project. If there is not a clear idea
expressed there will be confusion and they may not agree with the ideas
presented. All designs need to fit both the residents of the spaces but also the
function of each space.
I love working with team members, I feel as though its a great ability in
this industry to have. There is such a constant critiquing process with more
people contributing to a single project, you get more viewpoints put into it. I did
find it rather difficult working with a team online. Trying to get everyone on the
same page, distributing the workload and then bringing it all together into one
collaborative finished piece. Not to mention workings with a number of different
schedules with a deadline can be rather tasking. I will definitely utilize these
communication skills throughout my career. Maybe Ill be working with someone
in another state and the only way of getting a project done is through email or
phone.
