Dear Parishioners,
We are all promised the fresh and green pastures of Gods merciful love through friendship
with Jesus. Jesus leads some to these pastures via marriage, some religious life (e.g., the
Verbum Dei missionary community here), some through a life as a consecrated virgin in the
world, some young men through priesthood.
Committing to priesthood is not easy. Priests must give up many things, including the
possibility of marriage. Part of my discernment involved coming to realise that, despite my
attraction to marriage, Jesus has made my heart to be for everyone, not just for one other
person. Pope St. John Paul II said that a priest is a man for others. Because of this,
priesthood, not marriage, completes me. This may also be true for some young men here.
Mission is the essence of my understanding of priesthood and of the Catholic Christian life.
Ive never felt so alive as I do now in giving my life to make missionary disciples of Jesus
Christ, the Good Shepherd, as a priest. This was an important factor in discerning whether,
or not, to pursue a career as a football or swim coaching. My desire to make intentional
missionary disciples inspired me more than making great footballers and swimmers.
Priests help make missionary disciples of Jesus Christ. You too are a missionary disciple
who makes missionary disciples of Jesus Christ. I was furious to read recently that, the
Churchs activity is 40% missionary. The Catholic Churchs activity is 100% missionary,
however small it may seem. Former president of the U.S.A, Richard Nixon, asked a cleaner
working at Nasa what his role was. The cleaner stopped mopping, stood up proudly, and
said, Im helping to put man on the moon, sir! We experience Jesus, the Good Shepherd,
leading us to fresh and green pastures through a mission to make missionary disciples,
whether through marriage, religious life, consecrated single life, or priesthood.
We have a Mission Week here from Saturday 10th June to Sunday 18th June. Please, put those
dates in your diary, and pray for more labourers to lead the Mission to bring people to the
Good Shepherd who leads everyone to the fresh and green pastures of his merciful love.
