DIFFERENT PLACES FOR MAIN FLYOVER AND
RADHANAGAR BRIDGE AGARTALA, TRIPURA

1. INTRODUCTION
It has been proposed to construct embankment at different places for main flyover and
Radhanagar Bridge at Agartala, Tripura and the job has been awarded to M/s. NCC Ltd.

For designing of Foundation structures coming under this project, it was necessary to
conduct a detailed Geotechnical Investigation work to obtain engineering properties of the
underlying soil & M/s NCCL, in turn, appointed M/s. C. E. Testing Company Pvt. Ltd,
Kolkata as their Geotechnical Consultant.

The scope of the work comprised of only 1 no. routine plate load test.

2. FIELD INVESTIGATION
PLATE LOAD TEST:
Only 1 no. Plate Load Test (Routine type) was conducted using a 450mm square plate. Test
is continued upto a maximum loading intensity of about 24.43t/sqm. The load is applied
through a hydraulic jack. The reaction for applying the load on the plate is obtained by a
loading platform with sandbags. After applying the load increments, settlement records are
made at intervals of 1, 2.25, 4, 6.25, 9, 16, 25 & 60 minutes and thereafter at an interval of
an hour. Next increment of load was applied only when the rate of plate settlement reduced
to 0.02 mm per minute. The test results are discussed in Section-3.

3. DISCUSSIONS
PLATE LOAD TEST:
Only one no. (01) Plate Load Test (Routine Type) was conducted in the site using 450mm
square plate. Load (Vs.) settlement plots is made in arithmetic scale to calculate Allowable
Bearing Capacity. The calculations are presented below.

PLT 10: (N:8022.378, E:4739.477)


Ultimate Load corresponding to 25mm settlement = 24.05t/sqm
Applying a FOS of 2.50, safe load becomes (24.05/2.50) = 9.62 t/sqm
Recommended safe load = 9.00 t/sqm, Corresponding settlement = 5.25mm.

Based on the above data, the following is summarized.

SUBGRADE MODULUS:
Subgrade Modulus is obtained from Plate Load Tests as K = P/S. Where P = Plate Load
corresponding to settlement S. The corrected subgrade modulus for the plate is presented
below.

The Subgrade modulus value is inversely proportional to the square root of the foundation
area up to a base area of 10 sqm and then remains constant. The Subgrade Modulus value
for PLT-10 has been considered for calculations for other foundation sizes.

SETTLEMENT OF PROTOTYPE FOUNDATION:


Now As per IS: 1888, in case of sandy soil, we can write
or for clayey soil, Sp/Sf = Bp/Bf
Where,
Sp = Settlement of Plate (in mm)
Sf = Settlement of Footing (in mm)
Bp = Width of Plate (in cm) = 45cm
Bf = Width of footing (in cm)
Based on the above data, the footing settlement is calculated and presented in the following
table.

4. SUMMARY & CONCLUSIONS


Based on the field test and the foregoing discussion, the following are summarised.

1. Only one no. (1). Plate Load Test was conducted in the site (routine type) and discussed
in the previous section. Based on the above test result, the subgrade modulus for
foundation area is presented below.

Where, B = Width of footing in m.


Note: However, it may be noted that the expected total settlement will be much higher than those mentioned in the
above table. From the plate load test, only immediate settlement can be predicted. But consolidation settlement of
the underlying clay layer will also take place under the externally applied load. Considering these aspects, the SBC
achieved from this PLT shall be compared with the borehole data, if available at nearby location.
