Objective(s): At the end of this lesson students will be able to design two dimensional
shapes that we have been learning about.

Standards: CCSS.Math.Content.3.G.A.1

Essential Understanding (s): There can be different shapes with similar attributes.

Essential Question (s): Is there a limit to how many sides a shape can have?

Literacy Integration: Students will have to vocally express the characteristics of the shapes
they draw.

Vocabulary:

Open Shape

Body of Lesson: After our morning routines students will settle at their desks and show me
with their hands that they are prepared for math by giving the quiet coyote sign. Once we
are ready students will be given a chart with pictures that were made out of shapes. They
will create these pictures by placing pattern blocks on top of the picture they have. (5 min.)
Students will then pick three shapes that were used in their picture and talk about what
characteristics they have with a neighbor.(2 min.) After this we will go outside. Once
outside students will be put into groups of four. Each group will be given three colors of
chalk. Students will then create a hopscotch course using only the shapes we have discussed
from our online lesson that they should have watched the night before. (10 min.) When they
have created their hopscotch they will get to play shape hop. Every shape a student jumps
to they have to jump on each corner or angle. Then the stakes will get higher where they
will have to jump on each side. Every shape they jump on they have to say what it is and
count the corners or sides as they hop. (15 min.) Afterwards we will come inside and we will
talk about what shapes every group used in their shape hop. (5 min.)

Evaluation/Assessment: I will have a ticket out the door where I will hold up a shape to
each student at the door and they will have to tell me how many sides and angles that shape
has.

Accommodations/Extensions:

Accommodations: Students will only draw three shapes and name it when they hop on it.

Extensions: Students will have to create irregular shapes.
