REF DRAWINGS ANSI/AWS A2.4-(Latest revision), AI 1651

To prepare drawings properly for welding, the designer must have a means of accurately conveying
complete information about the welding to the shop so that this information conforms to the intent of the
designer. It is important that the same standard system of weld symbols be used by Engineering,
Inspection, Manufacturing, Manufacturing Engineering and Industrial Engineering of EMD and by all EMD
sources (suppliers), to avoid misunderstanding and confusion.

As of 7/24/1989, Electro-Motive adopted the standard welding symbols of the American Welding Society,
ANSI/AWS A2.4-(latest revision) for all new and revised drawings, which are covered in this instruction. A
copy of the AWS standard welding symbols can be purchased from:

A welding symbol chart EMD 1757 was the standard for all EMD welding drawings released prior to
7/23/1989. This chart is no longer available; see "Section 3" of this AI for cross reference from EMD 1757
to current AWS symbols.

1. The following section defines how EMD defines weld symbols in areas that EMD feels are unclear or
not addressed in ANSI/AWS A2.4-(latest revision). These are mandatory requirements.

1.1. Joint Preparation - EMD does NOT specify the weld joint preparation on the weldment drawing.
Weld joint preparation is given on the piece part drawing. Since this is the case, weld joint
preparation is not defined in the weld symbol at the weldment (assembly) level. In addition the
leader shall point approximately in the direction the electrode will enter the joint.

1.2. A groove/combination fillet weld with partial joint preparation (PJP) requires a groove weld the full
size of the joint with root fusion (joint penetration). The welder is first required to fill the groove weld
completely, and then apply the required fillet weld as shown in Figure 1.1.

Figure 1.1

1.3. Bevel groove welds that do not have a weld size (depth of weld) indicated will be considered as a
weld that has complete root fusion with the joint completely filled (full size). See Figure 1.2

Figure 1.2

1.4. When a bevel groove weld has a size (E) indicated, this is actually the depth of the weld. Since the
depth is difficult to measure, a measurement across the weld face is acceptable, as shown in Figure
1.3. As long as a WPQR (weld procedure qualification record) can prove the actual depth.

1.5. Intermittent Welds - EMD requires that intermittent welds shall start and finish at ends and corners,
see Figure 1.4. Weld lengths shall be as long as, or longer than the length specified in the weld
symbol. If the pitch specified can not be divided equally over the entire weld length, then one of the
following two options can be chosen:

1.5.1. Welds shall be spaced approximately equally with weld center to center spacing less than
the specified pitch in the weld symbol.
1.5.2. The length of the first or last weld can be increased to maintain the specified pitch. The
length may not be less than the length specified in the symbol.

1.6. Flare Bevel and Flare "V" Weld Sizes and Contour Explanations

1.6.1. When a flare bevel or a flare "V" weld has a ground flush contour indicated, the weld shall be
filled complete and ground flush as shown in Figure 1.5. For acceptance criteria of ground
flush groove weld see A.I. 1651 "Section 2".

1.6.2. When a flare bevel or a flare "V" weld does not have a weld size indicated regardless of
contour symbol of flush, concave or convex, the weld face shall be a minimum of 1.5 X the
thickness of the thinnest base material being joined. See Figure 1.6.

1.6.3. When a flare bevel or a flare "V" weld has a weld size (E) indicated regardless of contour
symbol of flush, concave or convex, the weld face width shall be a minimum of the weld size
(E) indicated on the weld symbol. See Figure 1.7.

1.7. Fillet Welds With a Size Not Shown - The minimum fillet weld size is the size of the thinnest
member being welded at the joint. This practice is used when welding smaller gauge sizes less
than 0.12” (11 GA) or 3 mm. See Figure 1.8.

T L

Note: L must be a minimum of T if

no specific weld size is given.

1.8. Root Gap - A weld joint with a root gap shall have the root gap allowance designed in at the piece
part level. A root gap is consider a joint preparation and is directed by rules in "Section 1.1". The
weldment (assembly) level will indicate the root gap with a “REF” dimension and the root gap will be
indicated in the weld symbol. See Figure 1.9.

R
Note: R is used to represent the
dimension of the root gap opening.

REF

1.9. Skewed T-Joints - When a skewed T-joint has an angle of 60° to 120°, a fillet symbol is used.
When a skewed T-joint has a an angle less than 60°, a bevel weld symbol is used. When a skewed
T-joint is greater than 120°, a Vee weld symbol is used. If the surface of the skewed T-joint is not
coped to match the matting part creating a natural open bevel less than 60°, then a bevel weld
symbol is used.

2. Fillet Size Reduction - In the past EMD had allowed for some deviation with regard to fillet weld size.
This is no longer an acceptable practice at EMD. Legacy drawings prior to 7/24/1989 may reference
this section for a fillet size reduction. Any reference to this clause on Engineering drawings or A.I.’s
are void upon release of A.I. 1046 Rev. K.

3. Weld Symbol Legacy Interpretation Guide - The following illustrate the difference between the
obsolete EMD 1757 and ANSI/AWS A2.4-(latest revision). The user must make the appropriate
interpretation based upon the engineering drawing release date. This interpretation becomes
especially relevant when legacy released part numbers are used.
