Instructor: Rebecca Hankey
Email: rhankey@rams.colostate.edu Website: Blackboard

Course Description
This course will examine world literature and composition. AP World Lit and Comp provides a
foundation for Advanced Placement English courses later in student education. Keep in mind that
this is an honors course and is recommended for more advanced English students (Rice).

Objectives
The Essential Learnings for the course are as follows:
1. Oral expression and Listening
2. Reading for All Purposes
3. Writing and Composition
4. Research and Reasoning

Instruction
There will be a multitude of instructional methods used in this course including discussion,
individual and group work, reading, writing, research, projects, and some lecture. There is a
focus on collaboration and group thinking. Group thinking and practice then leads to individual
application of curriculum.

Text Overview
We will be utilizing a number of texts including TED Talks, poems, plays, novels, short stories,
and articles. Our Essential Learnings are oral expression and listening, reading for all purposes,
writing and composition, and research and reasoning.

Required Supplies
- Pen/ Pencil
- Laptop, charger
- Composition notebook
- Three ring binder or plastic folder

Grading/ Deadlines
Grades will be based on a 100 point scale: 100-90% = A, 89-80% = B, 79-70% = C, 69-60% =
D, and 59-50% = Failure. The points scale will not go down to 0%. Instead, failure will be a
range of 59-50% not 59-0%. This can be confusing at first, but if you have any questions I am
happy to explain further. There are frequent opportunities to re-submit assignments, however not
all assignments can be re-submitted. Because this course is in preparation for AP classes
deadlines are emphasized. Late work will not be accepted.

Academic Dishonesty
According to the Fort Collins High School Student Handbook, both the teacher as well as
administration will take action to address instances of plagiarism and academic dishonesty. The
first incident will result in a zero on the assignment. Additional incidents may result in expulsion
from school (Rice).
Student Expectations
Non Negotiable
- Respect: It is important to the classroom and learning environment to have respect for
each other, resources, cultures, points of view, and the literature we are exploring. There
will be many opportunities throughout the year to discuss ideas and cultures in class and
it is imperative that it is done so with respect.
- Empathy: This is along the same lines as respect. For this to be a safe and productive
learning environment we must work to be empathetic to different situations and points of
view.
- Hard Work: This is an advanced class and takes a lot of work. I am more than willing to
give students the time, resources, and information that they need. Student must work hard
and put in genuine effort to succeed. There will be a great support system along the way!
