Content Area: Physical Education

Grade Level: 6th - 8th
Time Allotted: 50 minutes
Class Size: 40-50
Lesson # 5

Essential Question: Why is heart rate an important aspect of physical activity? What
information can it provide?

Content Standard(s): 3.5 Participate in moderate to vigorous physical activity a

minimum of four days each week.
1.3 Combine manipulative, locomotor, and nonlocomotor skills into movement patterns.

Prerequisites: For this lesson students will need to know the checking out and in process
for the Gopher HR bands. Students will also need to know what SMART goals are and
how to create one.

Specific Learning Objectives: In this lesson students will be introduced to the Sworkit
application and participate in a circuit activity created by the application. Students will
learn how to execute the displayed exercises on the application that are included in the
selected circuit. Students will also learn how to self assess their individual performances
and compare and contrast individual SMART goals.

Equipment Required:
Projector x1
Gopher HR bands x50
iPad x1
Sworkit application (on iPad) x1
Speaker x1
Survey x50 (optional)
Pencils x50 (optional)

Assessment(s): In this lesson students will be visually assessed through informal

observation as well as through verbal checks for understanding. The teacher will be
assessing student performance of the different exercises in the circuit activity. Teacher
will be looking for correct technique as well as assessing the level of effort. Students will
also be assessed on their evaluation of individual SMART goals. Students will write
about their progress towards their SMART goal created in the previous class.

Academic Language Demands: Vocabulary: SMART goals, target heart rate, evaluate,
assess.
In this lesson students will need to listen receptively to verbal instruction as well as be
able to read written instruction. They will need to productively speak using the academic
language in the lesson. Students will also need to write when evaluating individual
SMART goals.

Accommodations: This lesson will include a combination of visual and verbal

instruction to meet the learning needs of all students. Modeling by the teacher will be
used to address specific needs of EL students. Individual accommodations may be
needed such as allowing students to diagram rather than perform some aspects of the
lesson.

Planned Lesson Instruction: (Note: the first 5 and last 5 minutes of class will be
designated to allow students to dress)

Introduction: (5 minutes)
Class will begin with a short 5 minute warm up.
This warm up should include:
-High knee run in place (15s)
-Butt kickers in place (15s)
-Side to side hops (15s)
-Front to back hops (15s)
-Right leg quad stretch: standing (15s)
-Left leg quad stretch: standing (15s)
-Standing hamstring stretch (30s)
-Two minute warm up run

Body of the lesson: (30 minutes)

After the warm up activity have students meet in a central location and go through the
process of checking out Gopher HR bands (reference lesson 3 for exact procedures).
When students have secured wrist bands remind them to reflect on the SMART goal they
developed in the previous class that relates to target heart rate. Students should be
performing towards reaching their SMART goal during the circuit activity. Next explain
how the Sworkit circuit activity works. An exercise will be projected on the screen with a
model of how to execute the exercise. Student will complete that exercise for 30 seconds
and then transition to the next displayed exercise. There is a 5 second transition period.
This circuit can be completed in roll call positions. Set up for this this activity involves
connecting the iPad to the projector and projecting the activity for students to see. Sound
is not necessary for the application to work. (10 minutes)

Note: Choosing a Sworkit workout.

Students will then participate in the Sworkit for the next 20 minutes of class. Students
will be wearing the Gopher HR monitors and be working towards the individual SMART
goal they created for themselves.

Closure: (5 minutes)

Have students meet back in a central location in the gym for a brief closing discussion.
Have them share out about strides they observed towards their individual SMART goals.
Ask for volunteers. Next open up a brief discussion about the Sworkit activity verses a
normal circuit day. Have them list pros and cons.
End class with the same survey as lesson #3. This is their exit ticket (optional)

Extending the Lesson/Homework: Have students write a short paragraph about their
progress or lack there of towards their individual SMART goal. Have them list next
steps. This will be an entrance ticket for the next class period.

Reflection/Next Steps:

Teacher Notes: Sworkit

Sworkit is an exercise application found in the apple app store. This application has
preloaded workouts and if you pay for the premium version you can get sport specific
workouts as well as the ability to create your own workout on the app. The free version
still provides a variety of workouts and exercise examples. I would recommend any of
the four workout plans on the home screen of the app. My favorites tend to be from the
strength and cardio sections. The yoga section is great for a lighter workout day.
