This flyer is a one page handout for implementing how to improve
heart health and decrease the amount of death from heart disease and
stroke. This flyer would be useful for people who are learning about
their heart health or are at a check-up with their doctor because it
gives a call to action and provides information about things you can do
to improve your lifestyle to reduce heart disease. When looking at the
requirements for an effective health education piece it fit many of the
requirements. The message of the context was set up into action
sections to take and had a main heading. Under the main heading
there were sections that informed the reader about different tools for
the topic. With this the layout of the flyer had some white space and
was organized into three main sections. They were organized with
headings and had concrete nouns and verbs. The text appearance of
the flyer had a good text size that was easier to read, the headings
were a bigger font and color than the normal writing of the text. The
flyer had appropriate visuals that incorporated what the text was
talking about. This flyer is a good tool for understanding how to
improve your health to decrease your risk of heart disease. Also the
tips that are provided on the flyer are easy to do and understand for
the targeted age group of 18 and older. I also liked how they had a call
to action at the end saying to tell someone about your commitment.
I thought this was important because when you vow to make a change
it helps to have the support from others to encourage you when you
get discouraged. I think having more understandable language instead
of using cardiovascular and cholesterol would make this flyer better. It
also includes a lot of text on the back elaborating how to change each
of the individual risks of heart disease but can come across as
confusing and intimidating.

This flyer is a great call to action because it provides easy tools to use and how to use them.
It even states take action as one of the sections on it and provides steps to take to achieve
decreasing the risks of heart disease. I think it is a little word heavy but it provides easy to
follow steps and brings the reader information to follow and use. I think it would help if the
information for each of the simple seven was in bullet points or was less wordy to make it
easier to read, understand and apply.

This video and site clearly describe what it means to GO RED and take care of your heart
health. The video is short, sweet and provides the right information to take action. I really liked
how each woman spoke and that it featured all different ethnicities and ages of women. It
allowed them to share the facts that heart disease can happen to anyone. The only thing this
video and website didnt do was provide a summary but they do reiterate what the women say in
the video and make it easy to understand and follow. It provides another resource to go to for
discovering more about heart health and the risks. It also invites you to join the GO RED
movement which I thought was a really key component of this video. It makes you able to join
something that is working to better your health.

This video and website is also a good call to action piece. It provides you the steps
to take to ensure that you have better heart health and asks you to join the GO RED
program making you feel like you are a part of something bigger and are working to
better your health. The only part where this could improve is using visual aids to
make it easier to act on the steps to take to reduce the risk for heart disease.

a. What are some of the most important health education concepts you learned
completing these assessments?

Some of the most important health education concepts that I learned when
completing these evaluations is to make the information clear, concise and easy
to follow. When youre trying to promote or educate on an important topic
especially with health topics you need to think about all the possible parts a
person wouldnt understand and how to make them easy to understand. You
need to provide examples or visual aids to make it understandable and easy to
apply to the peoples everyday lives. When promoting health education you also
need to tailor it to your target audience and draw from other peoples life
experiences. Most people dont think that something can happen to them until it
happens but if you pull from personal stories youre showing the world that
anything can happen and if you can take steps to improve your chance of living
a healthy life then you should.

Heart Disease Doesnt Discriminate! Come Hear Houston, Texas

Chef Amanda DeJesus Speak about How Heart Disease Affected
Her and Led Her to the Passion of Being a Chef.

Boise, Idaho- Amanda DeJesus knows all too well how heart disease doesnt
discriminate and can affect anyone at any age. At age 13 she was diagnosed with
dilated cardiomyopathy which led to congenital heart failure at age 15 and a heart
transplant to accompany it. This led to isolation at home and loneliness but sparked
into creativity with cooking. Now 29, Amanda inspires heart patients to eat heart-
healthy diets while still enjoying the foods they know and love.

Amanda channels her struggle into passion for cooking and teaching others to
cook. Being diagnosed and recovering in isolation as a sophomore in high school
can really affect you but that didnt deter Amanda and it led her to pursue a dream
in the culinary arts. Amanda took her story and became a part of the American
Heart Association down in Houston, Texas and became a part of the Real Women.

Now shes here in Boise, Idaho on June 6 th, 2017 at the Boise State University
kitchen in support of the American Heart Associations Go Red for Women Program.
She plans on teaching us how to cook a few of her favorite heart healthy meals and
answer any questions. Some people may even be asked to join her at the front. The
American Heart Associations Go Red for Women Program hopes to inspire people to
be more aware of their heart health and realize that every one in three women will
die of a heart disease. Heart disease targets everyone but there are ways to prevent
it.

The American Heart Association founded the Go Red for Women Program in 2004
in hopes that it would break the myths of heart disease being an older mans
disease and make it not be the number one killer of women. The Go Red for
Women Program strives to raise awareness of the issue of heart disease and women
and save more lives. It collectively strives off the power women have to come
together and beat heart disease. It encourages them to know their risk for heart
disease and take action to lead a healthy life.

Program and to read other stories of personal triumph over heart disease visit the

2. Target Audience Considerations

The target audience that Im looking at is women ages 18 and older in the Boise, Idaho
region. When thinking about the depth of my target audience I realized that there are many
health literacy considerations. Some of the fundamental literacy skills that are important for
heart health awareness are the risk factors for heart disease and why they are important,
where the resources are to make a healthy lifestyle change, why health is important and
what to do if you think you are at risk for heart disease or want to know if youre at risk. Its
hard when youre only 18 years old and youre thinking about studying for exams and what
your friends are going to do this weekend but some people are also self-conscious about
their weight or how they think they arent exercising enough. Society defines beautiful as
something that is unattainable and it encourages younger girls to do things that are harmful
to their bodies. If they were educated on healthy meals and what it truly means to be
healthy in terms of physical activity, nutrition and other factors that contribute to heart
disease risks there could be less heart disease cases and healthy young women. Heart
disease doesnt discriminate or choose who it affects and it can affect all ages of women. Its
important to start at an age where girls can still form healthy habits but also educate those
who have experienced or are at risk for heart disease from ages 25 all the way to 65 and
even older. You can always make a change but if youre not educated about how to take care
of your health then you can never make those changes. I think with the topic of heart health
awareness that education not just about the risk factors for heart disease is needed but also
education about your heart and your body is needed too. When someone hears the word
arrhythmia, congenital heart defect or even an embolism they dont know what those words
mean. To someone whos been educated on the heart, they can tell you that arrhythmias are
a wrong heart rhythm and that an embolism is a group of blood cells that are stuck together
and moving throughout the body and can cause a heart attack or stroke. The last part of
health literacy that really stands out to me with heart health awareness is the health literacy
skills needed to understand the risks for heart disease. To make decisions, understand the
health information, seek care and treatment for heart disease and the risk factors you need
to be aware of how to find a local provider of health care, understand the information on
care of your heart, getting recommended screenings from your care provider, decide when
its a good time to go see your health care provider and not being afraid to ask your health
care provider questions when you dont understand something or are worried about a
certain aspect of your health. The more you take charge of your health and work towards
being a healthy individual, the less diseases and issues you should have with your health.

Article: Twelve-Year Follow-Up of American Womens Awareness of Cardiovascular

Disease Risk and Barriers to Heart Health

Link: http://circoutcomes.ahajournals.org/content/3/2/120

When looking for articles that addressed reaching my target audience using new
technologies I found very little to support what I want to achieve. Instead I found an article
that helped me see that what by wanting to raise awareness for heart health and promoting
education of heart health, that there can be a decrease in heart disease and women will take
more preventative measures with their cardiovascular health. The study collected data and
compared it to the responses given in 1997 and found that there was a significant increase
in the awareness that cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death since 1997. The
study found that only approximately half of the women interviewed would call 9-1-1 if they
were having symptoms of a heart attack. They said that some of the major barriers to
cardiovascular health prevention were caretaking responsibilities and confusion in the
media. They suggested access to healthy foods and public recreation facilities would be
some community changes that could be made to help better their prevention efforts. Overall
the article proved to me that education can make a difference and help women to want to
make healthy choices and live healthy lives. If we can educate and raise awareness about
heart health and the risk factors for heart disease then maybe we can decrease the number
of women who die or suffer from a heart disease.

3. Social Media Strategies-

Icare Health Monitor App for phones:

Link: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?
id=comm.cchong.BloodAssistant&hl=en

I believe that the use of this app for a phone or tablet would be an
effective means of social media strategy. The link that I provided gives a
description, pictures of what the app looks like and explains everything it
offers and that it does have some percent error on the calculations that it
does for some of the benefits of the app but all are very small. Its a
heart health app that can measure heart rate, blood pressure, vision,
blood oxygen, lung capacity and other physical data. It allows the user to
be aware of their heart and overall health, can keep track of their health
and make health plans to lead a healthier lifestyle. It would be a great
tool to use for on the go and it really makes you aware of your health and
how to improve it. The app is user friendly on both smart phones and
android phones and would really bring awareness to your health as well
as encourage you to improve your health.

The Heart Truth Pinterest Boards:

Link: https://www.pinterest.com/thehearttruth/
Pinterest is a website and is app friendly that allows you to pin or create
boards that have a theme. Many people use them to design wedding
details, create a quotes board and so much more. The possibilities are
endless. The Heart Truth has a user account that has many boards all
centered on heart health and the risk factors of heart disease. They have
inspiration; get active, real life stories, the red dress collection and so
much more for boards. Each board is centered on a heart aspect theme.
Its great for all ages because its not only encouragement but also it can
help you find easy and applicable ways to decrease your risk for heart
disease. All ages are into creating boards that inspire and challenge them
to try new things and really find what speaks to them. I think its a great
way to reach my target audience because its user friendly, fun and really
enhances what it means to take care of your heart health and your
overall health.
