Roadaccidentsarereportedinnewspaperandontelevisionevery
day.Therearemorefrequentlycausedbyrecklessdriversratherthanfaulty
vehicles.LastSaturday,whileIwastravellingfromIpoh,Iwitnesseda
seriousaccident.Thesceneoftheaccidentswasvividinmymind.

Amotorcyclistwasfollowingbehindwastaxiveryclosely.Hewasso
impatientthathewastryingtoovertakemytaxievennearasharpbend.At
thatcriticalmoment,therewasanoncomingcar.Thetaxidriverswervedto
theroadsideandIgotaterriblejolt.Itwastoolateforthemotorcyclistto
avoidthecar.Hismotorcycleranagainstthebumperofthecarand
smasheditswindscreen.Themotorcyclistsomersaultedoverthecarand
wasfoundlyinginapoolofblood.Itwasascenetochilltheflesh!Thecar
driver,whowascutbytheflyingglass,wasinastateofshock.Allthat
happenedinsplitsecondandfearoverwhelmedus.

ThetaxidriverstoppedhistaxiandIquicklyrantothenearestto
thenearesttelephoneboothtoinformthepoliceandthehospital.Froma
distanceIcouldseesomepeopletryingtohelptheinjuredmotorcyclistand
thecardriver.Theycarriedthemintooneoftheonlookerscarandsent
themtothehospitalfortreatment.Meanwhilethetaxidrivertriedtocontrol
anddirectsthetraffic.Soonthepolicearrivedandtheypromptlytooksome
measurementsandevidence.Afterthattheymovedthedamagedcarand
themotorcycletotheroadsidetoeasethetrafficcongestion.Theyalsotook
downtheevidenceprovidedbywitnessesandonlookers.Somesweepers
wereclearingthedebrisandthebloodstainsontheroad.

Whenthetaxifinallycontinuedthejourney,IsilentlythankedGod
formynarrowescape.Ilearnedagoodlessonthatimpatienceand
recklessnesswouldbringharmanddanger.Iwashappytoseethat
Malaysiansarepublicspiritedandtheyrenderhelptoothersreadily.Since
thenIrememberandfollowthesayingmorehastelessspeedand
preventionisbetterthancure.Ibelievegoodroadmannersandroads
safetycampaignscanhelptoreducethenumberofroadaccidentswhich
causeinjuries,lossandlivesandproperties.
