Please note:
1. Documental evidence for all the components/parts of the assessment such as the reports,
photographs, laboratory exam / tool tests are required to be attached to the assignment report
in a proper order.
2. The First Examiner is required to mark the comments in RED ink and the Second Examiners
comments should be in GREEN ink.
3. The marks for all the questions of the assignment have to be written only in the Component
CET B: Assignment table.
4. If the variation between the marks awarded by the first examiner and the second examiner lies
within +/- 3 marks, then the marks allotted by the first examiner is considered to be final. If the
variation is more than +/- 3 marks then both the examiners should resolve the issue in
consultation with the Chairman BoE.

PART A

The Supreme Court of India recently has lifted ban on registration of high-end diesel cars and
SUVs having engine capacity of 2000cc and above in Delhi and National Capital Region on
payment of one per cent of the ex-showroom price of such vehicles as green cess. In its
verdict, the apex court said that diesel cannot be termed as an undesirable fuel. In reaction
to this verdict an environmentalist said that it is very unfortunate that the court has actually
sided with the automobile industry and allowed the rich people to pollute air just by paying
the extra 1% green cess. There is no comparison on the amount of air being polluted to the
extra cess that is being collected.
Debate on the statement, Green cess is sufficient for tackling air pollution.
Your debate should emphasise on the following:
1. Advantages and disadvantages of using diesel as fuel in automobile industry
2. Discuss the impact of using ultra-low sulphur diesel in the reduction of oxides of sulphur
3. Suggest alternatives to diesel fuels for sustainable environment
4. Justification of your stance
(3+3+2+2)
PART B

B1 In one of the metro city, people suffered health issues majorly respiratory disorders even with
small physical activity. When pollution control board checked the air quality index at various
places, many of the locations it was above 400.

1.1 Discuss the method of calculating air quality index (AQI) and Identify the pollutants in the
atmosphere that cause respiratory disorders and industries from which these pollutants are
generated
1.2 Suggest suitable remedial measures and describe any one of the method that industries
could have taken to control these pollutants
(4+6)

B2 For a hypothetical reaction 2A + B2 2AB, the data obtained is as follows;

Table 1. Kinetic data at 25C

[A] [B2] Rate

Expt. No.
(mol L-1) (mol L-1) (mol L-1 s-1)
1 0.50 0.50 1.610-4
2 0.50 1.00 3.210-4
3 1.00 1.00 3.210-4
4 1.0 1.5 4.92 10-4

For the same reactants, the reaction is carried out at different temperatures and data is
presented in Table 2.

Table 2. Kinetic data of the above experiment

Expt. No. T (C) Rate constant, s-1
1 0 4.7 10-5
2 25 2 10-3

4 65 3 10-1

2.1 Analyze the data given in the table 1 and predict the order of the reaction with respect to
each reactant. State your assumptions clearly
2.2 For same concentrations of reactants, when the reaction was conducted at different
temperatures (Table 2), calculate the activation energy and collision frequency by graphical
method
2.3 Interpret the variation in rate constant with respect to temperature

B3 To enhance the aesthetic appeal of an object as well as protection from corrosion, chrome plating
has been used from years. A metal plating company got an order for chromium plating on shaft
used in the assembly of an aero-engine of Boeing aircraft. About 70% of the shafts were evenly
plated but other 30% had very high rate of rejection as they were not meeting the required
specifications. Rejected shafts were found to be iridescent and dew drop pitting in nature.
(Fig. 1)
3.1 Discuss the reasons of formation of dew drop shaped pits and iridescent nature of the
chrome plated shafts
3.2 Suggest remedial measures to avoid pitting and iridescent nature of chrome plating
3.3 Account for the health hazards of chrome plating (5+3+2)

B4 Recently WHO has released a statement that the half-life of beta blocker (drug for lowering
lipid level in blood) for treatment of hypertension should be less than 110 min. If the half-life
of the drug is more than the stated value it can cause side effects to the patient. A
pharmaceutical company has developed a drug A for the treatment of hypertension. Drug
A is a beta adrenergic blocking agent (beta blocker). It inhibits the enzyme HMG-CoA
reductase.
In a controlled study a pathological lab administered drug A to a hypertension patient
intravenously and analyzed the blood plasma of the patient for remaining drug. The data are
shown below, where (a-x) is the drug concentration measured at a time t after the injection.

t/min 0 30 60 120 150 240 360 480

(a-x) / (ng cm3) 880 699 622 413 292 152 60 24

Another antihypertensive drug B had average rate constant value 4.7793 x 10-3 min-1.

4.1 Evaluate the order of reaction for the drug A with the help of data given above
4.2 Compare the half-life of drug A with that of drug B and comment on the viability of
drugs for the treatment of hypertension
4.3 The equilibrium constant for the binding of HMG-CoA reductase with the drug can be
calculated using the equation log K = 1.36 + 1794/T. Calculate the standard Gibbs free
energy for the drug A at 298 K (4+4+2)
