Things Fall Apart by Chinua Achebe

The author is well known for his literary, social and cultural
contributions.
The purpose of the novel is to expose what happens when
traditional and colonial cultures collide.
The main character in the novel is Okwonkwo and his greatest
weakness is inflexibility.
The Igbo/Ibo culture is represented in the novel.
Stories and proverbs were praised in the art of conversation.
The District Commissioners title for the events that occurred in the
village was an ironic ending.
Nobel Prize and World Literature

Reflects important trends and concerns worldwide.


One the topics exposed in this type of literature is
apartheid, the official system of segregation on South
Africa.

Presents the struggle, social problems, consequences,
and the personal sacrifices that result from apartheid.
Magical Realism
Is a category in fiction in which fantastical, unbelievable
events take place in a realistic setting.
Usually Magical Realism is associated with Latin American
Literature.
Gabriel Garca Mrquez - The Handsomest Drowned Man In
The World
At the end of the story the villagers cleaned Esteban's body,
dressed it, held an elaborate funeral and then threw the body
off the cliffs. They wanted to name the village after him;
"Esteban's Village".
The Writing Process
